Drank from a 16.9 fl oz (500 ml) bottle purchased at Fort Point Market, Boston, MA
2022 vintage
Served in a tulip
Dark brown bordering on black appearance. Medium-full bodied for the style. Nearly flat and somewhat murky looking on the pour and oily and shimmery in the glass. After each sip, a thin film of sediment coated the vessel.
The aroma was outstanding. Toasted coconut came through big time. Loads of rich rum barrel character too. Pleasantly boozy. Milk chocolate was also noticeable. Nice lactose-like quality as well. Sweet overall but not excessively so. Cinnamon was detectable later, though I probably would not pick it out without prior knowledge of the beer’s ingredients.
Toasted coconut dominated in the flavor profile as well. Bit of roasted malt character up front. Rich rum-like notes were also quite apparent. Good dose of brown sugar too. Unlike in the nose, banana was noticeable here but subtle. Bit of semisweet chocolate. More boozy rum barrel notes on the back end and in the finish. At 14% ABV, however, the alcohol was very well buried. Nice lingering, sweet milky notes after the swallow.
Excellent rich, slick, oily mouthfeel. Fuller bodied for the style. The liquid contained a super fine and subtle effervescence that worked nicely for the style. By the drink’s end, a thin, sticky film coated my lips.
J. Wakefield stouts are usually impressive, but this one really blew me away. Even though this bottle set me back a whopping $30, I would gladly purchase it again. I am definitely looking forward to trying the other variants of this.
