You can only see its true cola brown colour when it's first poured into the glass. As it fills, the center becomes opaque and starts to look black from a distance. A finger's worth of cream coloured whispy head falls almost as quickly as it forms.
A rich, smoky meatiness is at the forefront with a pinch of tobacco. Its base is gooey and dense; filled with a variety of chocolate. There's brownie, there's chocolate cake, there's milk chocolate and a dry dash of cocoa powder as well. Freshly roasted coffee beans become more apparent as the beer warms. The nose packs some weight for it clocking in at 5.1% ABV. What an incredible smelling Porter!
The sweet, decadent,dessert-like qualities of the nose are tossed to the side in the taste, with a long, dry roast and unsweetened dark chocolate taking prominence. The cake and brownie characters are more of a suggestion in the middle but still give you something to chew on.
The feel is clean and dry with a medium body. The carbonation level is at par with the style. A streak of silkiness hints at the oatmeal used in the mash. I found the dryness to be a tad over pronounced, resulting in it taking away from the richness of the feel and flavour.
I like how they're leading with an Oatmeal Porter out of the gates. It's a solid porter through and through. I really enjoyed their IPA as well but it was sold out by the time I got there. Definitely worth a try.
