In honor of our brewmaster's grandfather who attempted to homebrew long ago back at the family farm, this beer is a full-bodied, London-style robust porter that has a black color with a deep-red tint and strong roast malt flavor balanced by high hop bitterness & aroma and fruity esters. Although most of Pappy's beers exploded, we're hoping this one does not, at least not physically. To Pappy!

Served in a sampler glass at Barrington Brew Fest 2013.
Moving on to an apparently new porter from the boys from downstate. This stuff pours a clear ruby-brown topped by a finger of khaki foam. The nose is awash in cocoa-laden coffee, not unlike the air surrounding one of those boutique coffee shops you occasionally come across at malls (malls still exist, right?). Nice. The taste, though, consists of a brief flash of cheap, over-roasted beans followed by an even briefer spell of what I assume to be roasted malts. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and an ethereal feel, one that drops off far too quickly to allow any of the flavors (weak and insipid though they may be) to establish themselves, much less linger for any effect. Overall, despite a promising smell, this porter just ended up being sad, uninspired, and too filled with self-restraint (I guess that's one way to put it...) to ever work.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
