apparently part of a rotating sour series, but they may or may not always use this brown ale base. it seems a lot more complex than the typical kettle sour, so i am listing it as an our bruin here despite not fully knowing how its made. i know this version was extensively aged in red wine barrels, and its layered and delicious, not too acidic, plenty funky, and showing cool fruit notes from the wine barrels, i had no idea they did beer like this at all. light brownish red in the glass, a little thin looking but fizzy like a soda, not quite clear. smells like faint fruit vinegar, medium range chocolate and crystal malts, and a ton of oak, super mature to me, tannic and wet. the flavor is great, dry cocoa and a nutty element from the grain, with tart cherry and raspberry notes, a port wine depth, and a lemony lactic profile leading the fermentation side, but there is some funkiness too with the oak as it warms, nice. sharp and drying, bubbly and light, tons of barrel influence. i was pretty pumped on this one, they did a nice job, fast finishing too for what it is, bravo.
