A crowd favorite! Jet black in color, yet light in body, our Black IPA will take you by surprise! Notes of roasted coffee and rich chocolate lead the flavor profile on this amazing beer. A mid-level dose of American hops deliver the typical IPA character, and it all rounds out with a clean, sweet finish with surprisingly little bitterness.

Pours jet black with no real head. Smells of dark malts. Taste is a porter brewed with dark malts, that has a citrusy bitter aftertaste. Mouthfeel is light and easy to drink. Overall, not bad.

This is a good black IPA. Mouthfeel is smooth. You get hints of roasted malt and coffee with the taste. Bittering hops are in good balance with the malt backbone. Complex brew that strikes an excellent balance making it easy to drink a few of these easy.

Aroma is dark malts, dark bread and a hint of pine. The flavor is dark malts, dark bread, grapefruit, mild tropical fruit, chocolate and a bitter/drying finish.

Draft at the brewery tap room, quick review from notes.
Black body with brownish edges, thin layer of tan foam with some minimal spotty lacing.
Average retention, skim breaks after the first sip.
Aroma is mild, it's barely roasty let alone hoppy. Like an average stout.
Taste is ok, dry and roasty with lingering resiny hop bitterness, but no actual hop flavor. Again more like a a slightly bitter stout than anything approaching a Black IPA. Body is thin, characteristic of several of Lena's beers.
Overall it's pretty average, won't get this again.
Reviews prior to the brewery opening in 2015 are obvious shills.

L: black
S: hints of citrus within the stout/porter aroma
T: very hoppy mixed with the cocoa of a stout
F: smooth with a bite
O: really tasty, they got the mix right on this one. I was apprehensive towards trying it, thinking it would be a mess and nothing like an IPA or a stout, but I'm happily wrong.

Think "New Glarus's Black Top, in a concentrated form". Awesome Black IPA, and Strong! Not intended as a session beer... when I get a keg of this, it'll last me longer than Lena's "Perfect Situation IPA" will. Not that this beer is less preferable... just that during a high volume consumption session, I best stick to less abv.
That being said, I look forward to sharing this beer with friends, and showing off how talented the masterminds of Lena Brewing Company really are... how good they are at this complex style of beer, right outta the gate, as their doors open... Awesome!
In summary, if you're trying to decide whether to make the trip to Lena to check out the Brewery, and if you happen to be a fan of Black IPA's, then this beer makes your travel decision a no-brainer!
