Notes via stream of consciousness: A "MATCHA LATTE ALE"? Interesting. The body is a cloudy golden with an orange sheen beneath a short head of creamy white foam. The matcha (finely ground Japanese green tea) is clear in the aroma long with some apple-like fruitiness, a little bit of vanilla, and a grainy malt base. It's definitely unusual. On to the taste... it's pretty much exactly as the aroma suggests it will be but sweeter and with more balance between the ingredients. The matcha is not as pronounced here, and there's less fruitiness and more vanilla. At first whiff I didn't have many hopes for this beer but it's actually quite nice. The matcha is pleasant, mildly leafy and grassy, a touch nutty, and subtly earthy and the little bit of vanilla livens it. The vanilla is mild but any more would probably throw off the balance and mute the matcha. It's not that bitter at all but it is itended to be a sweet beer, and I think it would make a great dessert beer. The other thing to mention is the fruitiness. At first I thought it was a litttle bit too much but once you've had a few sips it comes into balance and gives it a little punch and some additional complexity. I don't know, but I think that if it was just the matcha and vanilla it might be too one-sided. Also, as it warms up you get more of the maltiness and less of the fruitiness. In the mouth it's medium bodied on the fuller side, at least partially due in part to the added lactose, leaving it to resemble the mouthfeel of matcha. That's an interesting trick, not that I'm sure it was intended. It may have been simply added to lend some sweetness. Lactose isn't actually that sweet but it will give it some sweetness. Having said that, is it sweet, sticky, and cloying? Not at all. It's sweet, yes, but there are much sweeter dessert/pastry beers on the market. I think this has a good balance and it's actually the vanilla flavor that suggests much of the sweetness, so it's not really that sweet in the finish. It lingers a little but it doesn't stick, even with the lactose. All in all I think this is great and quite unique.
