Fresh Hop Hellsner pours bright gold with a near perfect clarity which in my opinion seems somewhat common for a classic Helles. It has a massive white foam above that takes its time to descend thanks in part to the unending supply of bubbles surfacing from below. Unfortunately, only spots here and there are left behind.
Smell is spot on. Bready yeast, freshly milled grain, with touches of honey, cut grass, and a dried floral note. Hard to detect the Fresh Hop influence over a typical Helles aroma, but it certainly does smell fresh and inviting.
Ahhh... There it is. The sweet malt adds honey and buscuit flavors, but the Santiam hops really shine here. Sweet floral elements compliment a black pepper spice. I can't quite explain this but there is a damp woody aspect to it that is just wonderful.
A smooth carbonation makes for a soft but then crisp feel. It's well balanced with sweetness barely taking the edge. It finishes nice and dry with a bit of sticky residue.
This is a well executed Helles. Baerlic always seems to impress, especially with the classic styles. This one is no exception, but it doesn't seem to have an overwhelming "fresh hop" influence. Fine by me. Great beer. Prost.
