Bottle: Poured a light clear brown color dunkelweizen with a large light brown foamy head with good retention and some good lacing as well. Aroma of banana bread with light caramel malt notes is quite nice. Taste is a great mix between some lightly sweet malt notes with light caramel malt and some excellent good banana bread notes. Body is about average with good carbonation. Great example of the style with good attenuation and super nice ester.

Poured into a Pokal/Footed Pilsner glass.

A: Opaque, med/dark brown with red highlights, aggressive pour gives a frothy, microbubble light brown/tan head, at least 2 fingers thick. Quickly dies off to a fine lace...

S: Sweet, toasted malts, slightly hoppy, some nut aromas.

T: Quite light in flavours, slight sweet malt, grains, a bit banana, bit of a funny tart/metallic taste, finishing with a small bitterness, overall quite thin.

M: Super carbonation on the tongue... very fizzy, which is more distracting than refreshing.... very thin body, slightly watery, just not very balanced. Slightly dry.

O: Was excited by this one, as I do enjoy a good Dunkel and you don't see many Canadian attempts at the Dunkelweizen variety , but sadly this one is a far cry from a Weihenstephaner. Thin, watery, overly carbonated, and on top of that just really lacking flavour.... started off well with the appearance, but then went downhill. Not really worth trying except to fill in your list.

500ml bottle - yeah, 'La' Nelligan just sounds weird, and further so for this Teutonic style.

This beer pours a clear, dark orange-brick amber colour, with a teeming tower of puffy, chunky, and somewhat fizzy tan head, which leaves some mesa-like lace around the glass as it slowly recedes.

It smells of lightly roasted, bready and doughy wheat malt, caramel wafers, brown sugar, banana pudding, some sweet generic nuttiness, and a very tame earthy and weedy noble hop bitterness. The taste is grainy and bready, wheat and caramel malt, bruised bananas, free-range smoke, pithy nuts, a touch of musty yeastiness, and more subtle leafy, weedy, and floral hoppiness.

The bubbles are pretty innocuous in their laid-back frothiness, the body a so-so medium weight, and mostly smooth, just a bit of ashiness marring an otherwise ascendant airy creaminess. It finishes sweet, the big malty and fruity notes still the biggest game in town.

Overall, this is a decent enough version of a Dunkelweizen, all the flavour hot spots duly nailed - it's just that there is an uncertain something that pervades the whole brew, which doesn't stand out, so much as pick away at my subconsciousness. I hate not being able to describe a sensation, but there it is.

Good roasted flavour with just a taste of bitterness at the end. A good "tasting beer" for early in the evening.
