Bomber received in a recent trade; listed at 5.7%. Served slightly chilled.
This porter has the complexion of cherry cola; opaque brown with crimson red highlights. An aggressive pour resulted in nearly an inch of creamy, light beige-coloured head that wilted off over the next 2 minutes. A thin collar remains, but absent any cap or lace. You know those hard candy sticks (usually held in lidded glass jars) that are commonplace in gift shops (i.e. natural parks or historic forts) and other tourist-y areas? There's always a jar with root beer or sarsaparilla-flavoured sticks, and this beer's aroma basically reminds me of those. Elements of vanilla, herbal sarsaparilla, molasses, caramel and just a touch of raisins and prunes. Enticing, to say the least.
You can keep your A&W and Barq's - now this is what I call a root beer. The sarsaparilla comes through with enough force initially to produce the illusion of a soft drink - but the base porter quickly dismisses this notion mid-sip, with flavours of roasted malt, caramelized sugar, chocolate and dark fruits (I am leaning toward plum and grape). Becomes more herbal towards the finish, with faint suggestions of anise underlying the vanilla sweetness and spicy root-beer-herb flavours, both of which linger on into the aftertaste. Rather light-bodied, with restrained carbonation levels that result in a smooth, somewhat flat mouthfeel. Oddly enough, that feature probably makes this easier to knock back than the fizzy, over-carbonated 'soft' root beers you can find at the supermarket.
Final Grade: 4.03, an A-. Hard root beers seem to be all the rage this year, and Manantler has positioned themselves very well to take advantage of that trend with their excellent Root of All Evil Root Beer Porter. While the sarsaparilla and vanilla take centre stage, the roasted/dark malt porter flavours manage to shine through more than adequately. This is a very solid, creative beer that I am glad to have tried, and would be well worth bringing into the LCBO. Good work Manantler, and thanks Chris!
