Rage and Love is our ongoing series of sours. The base beer is a dry-hopped mixed-fermentation ale, but sometimes we like to play around with different fruit combinations as suits our fancy.
Rage is fermented with lactobacillus and then finished with our house yeast strain.

355 mL can from the LCBO; no packaging date. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a hazy pale rosé colour, taking on more of an orange hue when illuminated; doing so also reveals some pulpy sediment. Just over one finger of frothy, off white head arises from the surface, disintegrating within two minutes; a thin collar lasts for another minute or so. Moderately aromatic; notes of passionfruit and raspberry overlap with hints of wheaty malts and a restrained lactic quality.
It's not a particularly intricate kettle sour, but the flavours work very well together: lactic acidity, tart passionfruit and juicy-sweet raspberry fruitiness make up most of the profile, supported by wheaty malts and floral hops. Finishes with raspberry and passionfruit acidity dissipating into a mildly tart, fruity aftertaste that doesn't last. Medium in body, with sharp carbonation that remains prickly throughout the course of the glass; the mouthfeel is soft, fluffy and somewhat juicy. Average drinkability for the style - I couldn't drink this all night, but considering the small serving size, I wouldn't turn down another.
Final Grade: 3.96, a worthy B+. Rage & Love Raspberry/Passionfruit is a pretty solid fruited sour. The sourness does seem dialled back, which may be related to the fact that it's a mixed-fermentation sour (i.e. started with lacto, but finished with regular beer yeast). This makes for a more balanced and (presumably) approachable quaff that should appeal to most of us that enjoy a raspberry beer now and then. I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way for more, but it's a brew I could see myself craving this summer - good work as usual, Rainhard.
