On tap at Three Huskies Brewing in Canandaigua, NY.
This one pours a light golden amber, with some orange tints, with a small head, and no lacing.
This smells like alcohol-soaked pine needles, caramel malt, and lots of grapefruit.
This is kind of like a 120 Minute light- and does everything that beer doesn't do. This actually hides the alcohol crazily well- it's pretty drinkable, actually. You can certainly tell the alcohol's there- it's 13.1%, after all- but it's not super boozy tasting, or astringent. There's a lot of hop flavor here- it's described as 280 IBUs. There's lots and lots of searing pine bitterness, with tart and bitter grapefruit, and a hint of orange. The malt character is unsurprisingly also very intense with a caramelly and toffee-like backbone, with some definite breadiness. This approaches barleywine territory pretty clearly- and it's not bad territory to be in.
This is pretty big bodied, and it's a little syrupy, but not overwhelmingly so.
I really expected this to be somewhat of a disaster- but I was actually pleasantly surprised.
