2018 Great American Beer Festival Gold-medal-winning Grandpa Tractor is Barley Forge's Dortmunder Export, an almost forgotten style. This full-bodied, moderately hopped German lager was the favorite drink of coal miners and heavy industry workers of the first half of the 20th Century in Germany. Hoppier than a Helles and less hoppy than a Pils, our Dortmunder strikes a balance between the two with a hefty mouthfeel derived from Pilsen malt and higher alcohol content (around 5.0% abv). This refreshing beer goes well with the end of a hard day at work and pairs nicely with grilled steak, any type of pork dish, and any sort of Asian or Hispanic cuisine.

Unfortunately I'm allergic to something in this beer. I'm thinking it's the yeast.

L: very light gold, clear as could be, I had a can and there was not much head retention and no lacing
S: almost lightly sweet on the nose, slight smell of apple, and Pilsner maltiness
T: a lot of flavor compared to other lagers I’m accustomed to, tasty malt profile with a very mild hop character
F: I felt it was under carbonated in the can I purchased but it was otherwise very easy to drink
Would definitely purchase again, in hopes that it was just this can that was under carbonated
Otherwise I could drink a six pack of this to myself and wouldn’t grow tired quickly

Got in a trade with RaulMondesi. 12 ounce bottle into lager glass, bottled on 3/5/2018. Pours slightly hazy pale golden yellow color with a 1 finger dense and rocky white head with awesome retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of cracker, white bread, and biscuit dough; with lighter notes of toast, honey, nutty, pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big cracker, white bread, and biscuit dough; with lighter notes of toast, honey, nutty, pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate herbal, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of cracker, white bread, biscuit dough, light honey/nutty, pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great robustness and balance of bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance; and zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Fairly crisp/clean finishing. Perfectly clean on lager flavors, with zero fruity notes present. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy, and fairly sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5%. Overall this is an excellent Dortmunder lager! All around great robustness and balance of bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink with the mellowly bitter/drying finish. Very flavorsful and not watery for the ABV. Very clean and nicely rich pils/Munich malts, with solid noble hop presence/balance. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

Golden Straw appearance like Lawerence crossing Arabia, and smooth like Eddie Murphy in the 80’s - we got ourselves a good one here. Taste is very clean grain and malt - probably how a Budweiser would taste if you put it through a Brita.
Man, Raul has no complaints here!

L: a bright golden-yellow, extraordinarily clear, white head which lasts less than a minute before fizzling down to a minmally thin layer.
S: smells like a classic european pilsener (reminds me of a heineken), but with faint hints of maltiness as well
T: taste is similar to the smell--a mix of european pilsener and a typical american lager. clean, simple, and delicious
F: very clean and crisp feel. my mouth delights in the feel of this beer.
O: overall this is an extremely solid lager

Dortmunder-Style Lager 5.0% ABV | 35 IBU
This beer pours almost see through and clear with practically no head and no lacing.
The smell for me almost had nothing to take. It was mainly malts and nothing more. It reminds me or a coors light here to be honest.
The taste here on the beer is very plain and follows the nose to a T. The taste is malty for sure with an interesting after taste that felt almost processed at times.
The feel on this beer is super light and I can agree how the brewery suggests enjoying this beer with spicy foods. It's very light on the mouth.
At first this beer is super refreshing and definitely stands above your coors/bud light. But after you let it warm a bit, this beer is right there. Heavy malt profile, almost no flavor to it, and it leaves an unfavorable taste in my mouth. I wouldn't suggest filing up a pint of this guy but i'd say you can give it a little 4 oz taster but don't complain to me if you're disappointed.

The beer is a clear pale yellow with a white head that thinned out. Nice carbonation moving up my glass. Nice aroma, a mix of wheat and grass. The beer starts a little sweet but than has a nice refreshing bitterness to it. The beer is very drinkable and refreshing.

Purchased at Green Jug (Woodland Hills, CA) and opened one 12oz bottle from a sixer on Mar. 9, 2017
Date stamped: 17-02-10 (Let's go with Feb 10th bottled date).
First thing noticed is how tightly sealed the bottle cap is, this one is not going to let in any air unless you want it too!
I've had this beer a few times now, so it's surprising that there are so few reviews here for it. On to the beer.
The pour from bottle to pilsner glass yielded a small amount of white foam, which subsided in a half-minute, some lacing observed. The color was the very lightest yellow, it could confuse most people if sitting side by side with a glass of Michelob Ultra, no difference in look.
Extremely faint aroma, a bit of bread, not much else I could discern really.
Tasted crisp, slight maltiness balanced with mild hop finish. While nothing jumped to the forefront, it's highly drinkable and refreshing. Very much sessionable.
Just the right amount of carbonation, overall found this to be an excellent brew, will definitely pick it up again from time to time.

I had this beer on-tap in a pint glass at the brewery.
Appearance: medium golden hue with only the tiniest bit of haze and a strong effervescence. I like it.
Smell: lightly sweet with a nice light hop aroma and light graininess. Quite to-style.
Taste: a little grainier and less sweet than the aroma, but still not a bad beer at all.
Mouthfeel: medium body with a big carbonation and very nice creaminess for the style.
Overall: a good example of a Dortmunder. Highly refreshing, although it could be just a tad sweeter in my opinion.
