Our first kettle-soured beer, this Gose is firmly tart before the salt and a hint of frutiness make the beer a refreshing delight! The salt was reduced in house from 20 gallons of sea water brought in by one of our customers. The frutiness comes from chopped rhubarb steeped in the wort as it soured. Look out for more tart beers--we really like this one!

Pours hazy, gold in color with one quarter inch head. Taste is big salt and pineapple and rhubarb. Light bodied, salty with moderate carbonation. Love all the brininess. Excellent super salty gose. Really curious about the rest of their lineup.

On-tap at Pizza & Beer of Richmond, Richmond, VA
A: The beer is light yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a short white head that died down and left a narrow collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate to strong aromas of sourness and lactobacillus are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell but isn't nearly quite as strong. There are also hints of saltiness.
M: It feels light-bodied and quite tart on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is easy to drink and has some refreshing properties but I wouldn't call it thirst quenching.

L: Poured from a 1 quart can to a cylinder glass. Had a pale color and a cloudy consistency. There was a half inch of creamy / fizzy head that quickly dissipated. Pretty good lacing.
S: A nice aroma of salt, wheat, rhubarb, and some spices as well.
T: Tasted of a moderate amount of rhubarb (a new one for me in terms of goses), a bit of sea salt, some coriander, wheat (mostly in the finish), some citrus (lemon), and other light fruits. This beer has an interesting flavor that gets better as it goes along. Light, vibrant, fruity, and tasty.
F: A well-carbonated beer with a lively finish. Light-bodied.
O: Shark Tears is a fascinating take on the gose style. Well worth a look.

Pleasure House Brewing "Shark Tears"
on tap at the brewery on 19 June 2017
$5.50/Pint
Notes via stream of consciousness: Gose w/ Rhubarb? Now that's interesting. Just 7 IBUs. Hazy golden body beneath a bright white head that displays limited retention, and unfortunately seems to be leaving no lacing ~ but that's not unusual for a sour beer. The aroma is tart, fruity, and mineralish. Whoah! It's very tart, I wasn't expecting that. It's a little too sour to be a proper Gose in my opinion, but I guess they called it that because there's some salt added. The fruitiness remains. Dry acidic finish. I wish the Rhubarb stood out a little more but it has a hard time fighting the acidity. Light bodied and sharp with acidity and a gently bristling carbonation ~ this beer will wake up your tastebuds! Still pretty decent. As I progress through the pint I'm becoming more accustomed to the acidity and I get more character out of it ~ I guess as it warms and the carbonation softens a bit as well. Nice beer. Somewhat unique. Worth trying.

Appearance: No lacing and no real head to speak of.
Smell: Rhubarb, sea salt with a general fruitiness.
Taste: Same as on the nose. I can definitely taste the sea salt.
Mouthfeel: fruitiness all over the palate with some carbonation.
Overall: I spoke with one of the persons involved with brewing this beer. He boiled down the sea water to get the salt! What a great idea! A patron provided the sea water. What a great story that perfectly illustrates why I admire the entrepreneurial spirit within the craft brew industry! Cheers!
