Big head that doesn't last but leaves solid lace for the style and a semi cloudy body. Nose is fruity and floral and citrus and a touch of pine. Flavor is similar with good overall balance and active yeast. Very flavorful and stiff for the style. Not just a weaker IPA, this has some more complexity, with some woody characteristics as well, and a dry finish. I would absolutely try this again or anything else from this brewer.

Monument City Brewing Co. "Pagoda Pale Ale"
12 fl. oz. can without production codes or freshness dating
$1.75 @ State Line Liquors, Elkton, MD
Look: Very hazy golden-orange body beneath a massive head of rocky off-white foam. The head retention and lacing are quite good.
Smell: Floral, citrusy, piney/woody, and yeasty over a straightforward golden malt base.
Taste: Sweeter than the aroma suggests, but also with a hint of acidity and some added fruitiness in the form of apple, pear, and tangerine. Floral and piney as well. The yeastiness remains which is distracting. Nicely baanced by a median bitterness, and mainly dry in the finish.
Feel: Medium bodied and gently crisp.
Overall: It's a bit yeasty to be honest, and that really hurts it in terms of appearance, aroma and flavor. Beyond that it appears to be quite solid if they can just clean it up a little bit.

12 ounce can poured into a can glass.
L: Amber, medium hazy, two finger off-white head, firm foam is persistent and leaves clumps of lace.
S: Moderate strength nose, citrus, pine, candy orange, flour, a bit of mineral aroma that disappeared after 30 seconds or so, aromas are well mixed with no real stand out.
T: Much as the nose, citrus, pine, candied orange, flour, orange peel and a little spice, medium-high bitterness, fairly clean and short bitter finish.
F: Carbonation is medium, body is medium weight and round with a semi-dry finish.
O: Enjoyable and fast drinking, nice balance of bitter and juicy hop flavor.

A clear, bubbly pale amber with a muted soft nose with floral and citrus notes mainly. A bit sweet and taste follows the nose with a sort of hibiscus and tangerine flavor profile. Medium-bodied, dry dry and crisp, refreshing and finishes cleanly

Very enjoyable PA. Nice hop profile. DDH evident. Decently smooth. What’s not to like? May start stocking this as regular for awhile.

This DelMarVa (+ DC) adventure of mine has morphed into my latest CANQuest (tm) focus! I really had no idea that MaryCANd, especially, was putting out so much beer. 8=O It seems as though every time I feel like I a close, some more beers from that area Pop! up from out of hiding to surprise me. Further, I am back to work so I CANnot keep up the pace that I set during the Christmas/Winter Break. 8=( On top of all of that, even New Beer Sunday is off-limits due to prior CANmitments. 8=( Inna meantime, a shout-out to my local, in-person trader, @tone77 who recently dropped this off for me.
From the CAN: "This American Pale Ale is brewed with 100% Cascade hops. Light in color and double dry hopped giving it an abundance of floral, spicy and citrus character. Cheers!"; "Please recycle this CAN".
I will not be doing the latter as they go to Jeff Lebo of York Haven, PA's BrewHouse Mountain Eco Inn for his CANlection.
I did, however, Crack! open the vent to begin a slow, gentle C-Line Glug into the awaiting glass. It proved to be CANother very active beer, foaming mightily through the vent! No problem on my end as I know exactly how to CANdle such situations. The keys are a) NOT TO PANIC! & b) keep on Glugging until 1) the foaming action subsides or 2) the foam has filled the glass to the point that there is no more room. I ended up with two-plus fingers of dense, rocky, foamy, tawny head that looked like it had come out of a spray CAN! 8=O Color was a hazy Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9). Nose smelled fabulous, leaving NO question that it was ALL Cascade! It was like standing in the middle of a pine forest in the Winter and taking a deep breath. Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was full-on pine, from sap to bark, to cone to needles. Mmm. If the previous beer was peppermint, this was wintergreen! Dig it, daddy-o! The malts had the good presence of mind to fall back & stay out of sight, making it outta sight, man. Finish was cool & dry & had they NOT called it an APA on the label, it could easily have qualified as an AIPA. This was much more aligned to the style & I really dug it. Man, I am liking these guys, for sure! YMMV.

L: Light orange, and light haze. Tiny head that flattens out with tiny bits of lacing 1 minute in.
A: Melon? Hard to distinguish the aroma's here.
T: Wide open flavor profile. Citrus, possibly melon based, but the flavors are blurred.
F: Light to creamy. Light carbonation, very little bitterness, yet a bitter taste holds on.
O: A hard beer to figure out. There is either a new (to me) hop variety, or I'm having an off day.

11/9/19 - Single from Elkton; did a comparison with Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Both are very nice. Monument is a bit sharper compared to the milder SNPA, but very nice as well. This is the second MonuCity beer we had, and both are good. We'll need to try more, maybe visit. Jan 2020 Visited!! and had on tap at the brewery. As usually the case, better than the can - but noticed if the cans get reeeally cold, the taste improves monumentally!! LATER and 11/20, I would re-rate this much higher; this is crisp and very tasty, really what I've been looking for and the best I've found in years (altho' not as golden in color as I usually prefer); just got a case from Elton (can't get in PA or DE)
