A Bock-style Ale brewed as a lager, this pre-prohibition style showcases a malty backbone with a mild, roasty finish.
Originally brewed in Germany to be a symbol of better times to come, Sigi’s is perfectly suited to enjoy on crisp mountain days and nights as the seasons turn. Our medium-bodied bock is a fine choice for when you want a bigger beer that drinks lighter than it actually is. To recreate this Colorado classic, we included fire-kilned malt just like Moritz Sigi did here at Tivoli back in 1864. By taking our time and aging like a lager, the subtle flavors of the malts become much more prevalent and harmonize cleanly with our German Noble hops.

A concotion of an 1864 guess @ an attempted brew recipie that tastes really pretty dang good, if a brown bock is what you want w/an interesting but definite camp fire smoke after taste. We'll take a couple of these on our next camping trip, alrighty.

12 oz. bottle poured into tulip.
A- Deep reddish hued brown. Head is light brown, and a bit foamy. Retention is okay, and there is no lacing.
S- Dark sweet malt. Not much roast, but a very faint smoke. Vanilla. A light alcohol twinge.
T- A little smoke, but smooth. Mild sweetness, vanilla. Even more mild roast.
M- Smooth with a mild roast astringency in the finish. Medium bodied.
O- This one has some pretty good depth. Unexpected characteristics, like the like smoke notes.

Bock beer brewed with ale yeast and German Noble hops. Brief initial impressions from a bottle purchased as part of a sixer in Denver, CO for $6.99 USD::
APPEARANCE: Head is weak, fizzling out within a scant 20 seconds. Body is a translucent transparent amber of below average vibrance. Quite weak and dull looking.
AROMA: Brown malt sweetness. Heavy on residual sugars. Caramel. Amber malt. Maybe crystal malt. Bready and saccharine, with no detectable hop profile or yeasty intricacy whatsover.
Suggests an unpleasant syrupy sweet beer with nothing of interest apart from its alcohol content. Aromatic intensity is moderately high for a purported bock.
TASTE & TEXTURE: Syrupy sweet, lacking adequate attenuation (even in spite of their eyebrow-raising utilization of ale yeast). Heavy amber malt and caramalt sweetness. High residual sugar content. Cola nut. Burnt bread crust. Caramel.
No hop flavour at all (to style, admittedly). No yeasty intricacy.
Smooth, wet, medium to full-bodied, sticky, heavy on the palate, overcarbonated, and dreadfully thick and weighty. Overall presence on the palate is poor.
Imbalanced and badly built, with no adherence to any style (including the intended bock style). Shallow and simplistic. Why brew this?
OVERALL: I tried and enjoyed Tivoli's pilsner and hoped this would be just as good, but trying it it's evident why I was able to snag it on-sale. Even at $1.25 USD per bottle it isn't worth picking up, and finishing even one bottle will prove a chore. I'm not sure what they were after with this, or why and how this passed QC. There's a scintilla of the fire-kilned malt coming through, which is the only positive thing I can find in this beer, but it's just not a beer that should have been released in spite of not suffering from any overt off-flavours.
Low D- (1.81) / NOT RECOMMENDED

09.25.17 2nd impression:
A malty faux-German headscratcher of an ale. Were they following a recipe and targeting a style or just haphazardly dumping random grains and hops into the kettle?

Look: 2-finger head. Crystal clear copper color with reddish hue. Great head retention. Not much bubble replenishment though.
Smell: Malty - rich caramel. German yeast flavors apparent.
Taste: Slight bitterness, followed by a fruity flavor covered in sweet caramel Very rich and malty. German grains and yeast very noticeable. Dries out - left with some oak, nut, and smoke aftertaste.
Feel: Medium mouthfeel and smooth. Almost oily and slick.
Overall: Impressed with this one. I did not expect so much flavor. Traditional German flavors, but very clear and crisp (as this one was treated like a lager?).

This is a weird one and I like it. Roasted nuts, dark dry bread crust, unsweetened cola, burnt caramel. No overt hops. Chicory tea. What? I love that I am totally surprised by this, which is becoming a rare experience in the world of beer for me. Well done Tivoli! This is my first beer of yours, and won't be my last!

Really deep amber-garnet hues. Nearly opaque from the deep dark color but quite clear in reality. Thin head that leaves some nice lacing behind. Handsome beer. Smell is a bit faint; today notes, clean hops, maybe some weak grains. Honestly not too much to the aroma.
Tastes are fairly standard brown ale tastes. Malty up front with suggestions of almost hazelnuts and barley. Very smooth, great carbonation work here. Finish has a distinct hops presence, more than I expected. Leaves a slightly dry feel on my palette.
Overall, not bad. I've had far better browns in Colorado, but I've also had far worse. Could appeal to some as a session brew.

Tastes like a weird mix between a brown ale, a bock, and an old ale. Strange.

On-tap at Front Range BBQ in Colorado Springs...
Chestnut brown body; one-finger thick head. Malty, roasted grain aroma. Brown sugar flavor; nuts; bitter edge. Medium body; residual sugar feel; crisp; gently sweet finish.
A sweet, tasty American brown ale, heavy on the malt sugar notes yet deftly balanced with a couner-balancing hop aroma and bitterness and satisfyingly complex. A fine, unique Colorado take on brown ales.
