Mostly clear looking though there is a fair bit of silty sediment in the bottom, dark golden in color with a double finger of off-white, rocky looking head that has a pretty decent retention to it and leaves a good amount of patchy, webby lacing.

Mild aroma, moderately malty caramel notes with some light hints of pineapple, peaches and pine.

More flavor then the aroma would indicate, some yeast notes forward give a slight pineapple and herbal hint on the palate, with a fair bit of bitter orange citrus peel right underneath that.

Medium bodied with a grainy almost husky malt body and a mild caramel sweetness to it with maybe a ghostly hint of burnt toffee towards the back end.

Faintly earthy and slightly bitter yeasty spice notes of coriander, cumin and cloves on the finish along with a fairly bitter hoppy flavor of pine needles, light medicinal crushed aspirin traces and maybe some faint hints of earwax that lingers for quite awhile on the aftertaste.

Get rid of the pine taste. This could be a really good beer if that pine needle taste was taken out.

Light IPA. Very peppery, if that’s your thing.

341 mL bottle included in their latest mixed 12 pack, which I picked up at The Beer Store earlier this week. Dated Nov 16 2016 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a rather turbid golden-yellow colour, with an inch of lumpy, foamy white head soon settling upon the surface. It recedes slowly but surely over the next ten minutes, resulting in a rocky, meringue-like cap about a half-cm high, surrounded by a generously-sized collar and a beautiful coating of thick, sexy lacing - visually, it reminds me of a Belgian-style IPA, and a pretty good-looking one, at that. Apricot and nectarine on the nose, along with orange/lemon peel, bready wheat malts, peppery clove spice, floral hops and yeast, with just a touch of banana.

Up until this point, everything about this brew had been above average - which, sadly, only made the first few sips all the more disappointing. Coarse grains, wheaty bread and doughy malt sweetness are the backdrop, with clashing hop flavours rising towards the finish. Hints of apricot and banana are soon overwhelmed by the grassy, herbal hop flavours and spicy, peppery, yeast-derived notes that are featured at the finish. The aftertaste is a bit persistent; yeasty and spicy, with mild pine needle bitterness. Light-medium body, with relatively low carbonation that gently agitates the palate, with the overall texture being fairly soft and quite smooth. Not too challenging to drink, and not particularly refreshing.

Final Grade: 3.62, a decent B grade. Okanagan Spring's Big White White IPA leaves something to be desired. I realize that this wasn't a particularly fresh sample, and normally I'd be willing to cut the brewer some slack because of that... but the fact that their parent corporation has an ownership stake in the beer-retailing monopoly responsible for selling me this nearly six-month old IPA doesn't encourage me to give them a lot of leeway. It's fine for a tick, but not something I'd go out of my way for again, or recommend all that eagerly.

341ml bottle, the latest seasonal release from this BC brewery - named after the local ski resort outside of Kelowna.

This beer pours a slightly hazy, medium golden amber colour, with three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly off-white head, which leaves some tacky snow rime lace around the glass as it very slowly abates.

It smells of canned peaches and apricots, banana peel, bready and doughy caramel malt, a subtle earthy yeastiness, and some tame leafy, piney, and grassy green hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, bruised banana, a now generic stone fruit character, somewhat acerbic yeast, muddled earthy spices, and more understated piney and herbal hoppiness.

The carbonation is fairly lightly applied, via its gentle frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and mostly smooth, just a touch of beastie yeastiness mucking things up a tad here. It finishes well off-dry, with the mixed fruitiness and plain malt presiding.

Overall, Big White (the beer) comes across like a hefeweizen blended with an IPA - big estery fruity notes and yeast run the show. Not bad, really, but different, and exactly like what one might imagine would happen if you got a German brewer to make a Belgian-style IPA.
