Pours a coppery orangish with a 1" thick white head which fades to a thin cap and leaves semi-rings of lace. Aroma of dry flowers and grain. Taste is piney with a bitter and dry finish. Just O.K.

On tap at Mount St. Helena Brewing Co. on 7/16/09. Served in a Ball mason jar!

A - Hazy reddish/copper/amber body with lots of active carbonation and about a finger's width of frothy, beige head that settled into a slim veil but left a nice amount of lace around the rim of the jar. Head swelled up with each swirl.

S - Citrus hop notes paired with caramel malt and a hint of toasted grains. Some floral notes and slight waft of alcohol also emerge as the liquid warmed up a bit. Not an overly hoppy nose for an IPA, though.

T - Opens with sweet, slightly burnt caramel malts and some mild perfumy hops. Subtle alcohol notes appear midway through to the finish, accompanied by lots of toasted grains and a slightly metallic hop bite suggesting floral and citrus hops.

M - Medium body with a light syrupy texture, perhaps a bit thin and watery overall. Fairly lively carbonation results in some prickle on the tongue. Subtle hop bitterness on the palate with a moderate linger factor.

D - Pretty good IPA overall, perhaps average to slightly above average with a decent hop profile and nice malt backbone. Mouthfeel is a little thin and lacking overall.

Batch #3. Copper color, medium head. A full-bodied IPA. Very hoppy but with a mellow malt undertone. Very hoppy on the first sip, but mellows noticeably with time. This is a big, expansive IPA. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is malty and smooth. Aftertaste is bitter. There is a slight alcohol bite, despite a 6.8%. Some bottle aging could really make this beer exceptional. Winner Gold medal at 2001 World Beer Championship.
