750 mL wax-sealed swing-top bottle from the LCBO; dated Oct 2016. Served slightly chilled.

This Belgian-style dark ale pours a clear reddish-copper colour, with an intentionally aggressive pour managing to produce only one finger of bubbly, soapy, off white-coloured head. It proceeds to quickly vanish over the next 60 seconds, depositing a thin collar of foam, but essentially no cap or lace. The aroma definitely leans toward the sweet end of the spectrum, featuring notes of red licorice candy, cherry, plum, fig, caramel and treacle. Has a bit of a fruitcake vibe to it, with subtle hints of spice, bubble gum and boozy sweetness.

Not bad; a very malt-forward affair, as one should probably expect from a BSDA. Toffee and treacle sweetness are fairly prominent, as are the aforementioned fruitcake vibes - I'm getting prune, fig, cherry and maybe even some raisin, with an inordinately prominent (for the style) banana ester note. Very faint hints of cocoa, which are quickly overrun by beet sugar and red licorice sweetness. Finishes with some herbal, resiny notes and an understated floral bitterness that gives way to mild boozy warmth, nutty amaretto and persistent malt sweetness. The yeast character is pretty muted, while the malts are near-overwhelming - almost cloying. Leaning towards full-bodied, with soft carbonation that barely registers on the tongue - this one just feels smooth and slick on the palate. Its drinkability is limited both by its lack of balance and its detectable warming qualities.

Final Grade: 3.49, a B-. Lune de Sang - with its sleek, superficially attractive packaging (which alone may be enough to draw some BAs into a purchase) - is simply not nearly as good as the top-tier abbey-style imports. I've been drinking Mill Street products for close to a decade now, and off the top of my head I can't think of a single Belgian-style beer of theirs that was really up to snuff. Perhaps their Wit, I guess? This strong dark ale is drinkable, but runs the risk of leaving Trappist beer fans feeling gypped, especially at $9.50 a bottle. I'd been considering grabbing another bottle to hold onto for 8-12 months, but given the middling quality vs. price ratio I doubt I'll bother.
