For Mill Street, this is not a disaster.
The pineapple is only noticeable on a fresh pour and first one or two sips. It disappears, as does most of the other flavours, yet it isn't horribly bad. I bought a small growler and I will most likely not have it again.

355 ml bottle served fairly cold into a tulip. Thanks to John for this 6 pack and the new beers inside.

Appearance - Pours a very cloudy deep copper colored beer. Kind of a pink tinge to the coloring as well. A decent finger of frothy white head is poured, but it doesn't last terribly long and minimal lacing left behind. Lots of bubbles rising up the side of the glass.

Smell - Not a big nose, but quite a bit of pineapple is present, with some overripe other tropical fruits maybe mango. Malt heavy too, which is something I don't terribly enjoy in an IPA, with a grainy sweetness shining through.

Taste - Quite a bit of pineapple, but not nearly as intense as I though it would be and a little more bitter than expected as many IPA's that focus on pineapple lean towards the sweet and especially citrusy side of things. Canned pineapple syrup as another review pointed out is a taste that is definitely there for a split second at the beginning of each sip. A little more earthy and weedy than expected, and while not bad, it is different.

Mouthfeel - Medium-heavy body, quite sticky and not the easiest quaff. Finish is also sticky and carbonation is medium-high but appropriate.

Overall - Not a bad IPA, but I'm just left wanting a little more pineapple, a little more intense and a little less stickiness. Left slightly wanting.

355ml bottle - part of Mill Street's current (winter, I guess) mixer pack. Named after some sort of wind.

This beer pours a hazy, medium golden yellow colour, with four fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and somewhat bubbly ecru head, which leaves some decent splattered sudsy lace around the glass as it rather slowly dissipates.

It smells of sugary pineapple juice. bready and doughy caramel malt, and some faint earthy, musty, and floral green hop bitters. The taste is the syrup from canned pineapples, grainy and bready caramel malt, a bit of wet minerality, some mild earthy yeast, and more well understated leafy, herbal, and floral verdant hoppiness.

The carbonation is fairly restrained in its lackadaisical frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and generally smooth, with maybe a wee clamminess seeping in as things warm up around here. It finishes off-dry, the pineapple and malt stuck in their lingering pose.

Overall - this is a respectable enough attempt at making a frooty IPA, with the pineapple addition pretty much masking any benefits that the Mosaic hops might have offered. It tastes good, I suppose, but I don't think that I would really want another, as the pineapple character is getting sort of trying as I finish the rest of the glass.

355 mL bottle from the LCBO; one of two new Mill Street brews included in their latest seasonal sampler iteration. Dated Oct 24 2017 and served slightly chilled. Reviewed from notes.

Pours with a cloudy, golden-yellow complexion, producing one finger of loose, frothy white foam that fizzles away within 90 seconds. The only remnants of significance are a narrow band of uneven lacing, and a thin collar of bubbly foam. The aroma delivers as advertised, with pineapple juice really sticking out - akin to opening a can of chunks. Light hints of tangerine and apricot are much less apparent, as is the faint whiff of weakly floral hops.

A boilerplate IPA infused with more than enough pineapple juice flavour. Some grainy pale barley malt sweetness is easily missed amidst the pineapple - though the hops also play a role in hogging the spotlight, imparting hints of peach, papaya and orange peel. Grassy, pithy bitterness begins to come through on the back end, becoming more earthy and floral towards the finish. Juicy aftertaste, and medium in body, with moderate carbonation levels that gently scrub the palate with each sip. Relatively smooth, with high drinkability for an IPA.

Final Grade: 3.61, a decent B grade. Mill Street's Makani Pineapple IPA is very much a one trick pony. The Mosaic hop character gives it enough of a pale ale backbone to make it serviceable, but I mostly feel that the pineapple juice dominates its flavour too much. This one's not exactly unappealing - just a wee bit one-dimensional. I think their West Coast IPA, which was also included in this sampler, is a better stylistic example, but this one might have broader appeal overall. Decent enough; I could take it or leave it.

Pours a hazy, pale amber body, with just a touch of soapy head forming at the top. The aroma has a dominant sweet pineapple undercut with rich malt and tropical hoppiness. On the palate, sweet pineapple dominates with lingering hop bitterness at the back in an almost syrupy manner. The finish is not pleasant, either. Let's just stop the juice IPA's, shall we?
