473 mL can from the LCBO; coded Feb 28 2023 and served slightly chilled.
Pours hazy and turbid, its pale-yellow body topped with at least two fingers of fluffy, foamy white head that recedes within the next five minutes or so. Several delicate swaths of lace are left in its wake, in addition to a generous collar and filmy cap - looks fine so far. It smells of passion fruit and lactic acidity, with hints of mango, citrus, wheat and perry.
Leans a little more towards juicy (vs. tart/sour), particularly on the front end. Mango and pear flavours come first, interspersed with notes of orange juice, cereal grain sweetness and mild lactic acidity. Suggestions of passion fruit and lemon yogurt at the finish, with hints of pear juice, mango and orange peel lingering briefly into the aftertaste before drying off somewhat. Medium in body, with middling carbonation that provides some crispness to this sour's smooth, juicy mouthfeel; good drinkability.
Final Grade: 3.78, a B+. Mill Street's Tropical Sour is a palatable fruit beer, but its cred as a sour is questionable at best. The pear, mango and orange carry most of the load here, with the other ingredients (including the lactic sourness) largely left out of the limelight. I actually liked this more than I was expecting to, but that was before I realized it was back-sweetened with pear juice - I'm a sucker for perry, so I'm a teensy bit biased here. I'd drink this again, but a macro sour priced at nearly $4 per can is a hard sell, period.
