On tap from a Walla Walla bar, poured into a 16 oz Weizen glass
Looks: Completely opaque. Like black coffee. Started off with a nice, creamy half-finger head that unfortunately dissipated quickly (after about the third sip).
Smell: Very little hop, malt, or alcohol smells. Very clean, with a tiny bit of ester (banana).
Taste: Starts tasting like a crisp lager, almost like a pilsner. These flavors quickly give way to a toasted malt flavor that reminded me of coffee and was borderline smoky. Definitely not too intense, and the light mouthfeel actually contrasted very nicely with the darker malts. This beer looks much darker than it tastes. There is a subtle background amount of (almost metallic) hoppy bitterness that is typical for many German beers and doesn't express any citrus/floral through either taste or smell. The aftertaste is all roasted malt.
Overall, I appreciated how the clean, crisp flavors allowed for this beer to be much more drinkable than its first impression would have you think. It looks more like an imperial stout than what most people think of as characteristic of a German lager. I would have no second thoughts about ordering this beer again.
