Canned on 2/6/19

Pours an inky, thick jet black topped with a sizeable few fingers of dark mocha foam; decent head retention leaves some short-lived webby lacing and collar.

Aromas of some pretty bitter malty roast/char strike upfront, but soften as the beer warms; I start to get more nutty tones alongside soft milk chocolate and some coffee grounds, all of which are ultimately hindered by an overarching (but not entirely overwhelming) green pepper note.

Taste, much like the aroma, shows an overt roasty bitterness until it warms, allowing the the profile to even a bit; that’s to say, the blunt hoppiness of the profile is made a bit more manageable. From what I can gather beyond that, there’s a soft influence of dry coffee grounds and subtle baker’s chocolate also, caught up in the head-to-head between the malt and hops.

Mouthfeel inky, creamy medium-heavy body with some ridiculously balanced carbonation that has this flowing effortlessly across the tongue; shows a bit of roasty grit from the mid-palate onward, but not enough to unbalance what is an exceptionally smooth, semi-sticky finish with just a hint of dryness at the very end.

Imbalance. That’s far and away my first response to this one, as it’s by no means inherently bad; for me, this stout just needs a bunch of fine-tuning, as the more nuanced maltier notes just can’t seem to get through beyond all the hoppiness and roast.
