This is a Winter release - and this year's came in at 12.7% so I'm not sure it is even the same beer really. I believe they describe it as an English Barleywine rather than an American one...
Had on-tap at the brewpub 2/5/10, served in a 5oz snifter.
Falu red with Upsdell red highlights. A small off-white collar lasts for several minutes before losing out to the ABV. Slightly dark, but still pretty clear.
Canned mixed fruit, melted light brown sugar, with hints of red-vines and sherry in the nose.
Strong and sweet flavor profile with a bit of heat in the finish (though, not solventy despite the high ABV). Hops faintly suggest citrus before the finish gives way to a drying wine-grape-like taste (unsure of which variety it compares to). A little one-dimensional.
Both a touch syrupy and a little thin despite the alcohol. Very low carbonation, barely sufficient even for the style.
Well made, but could do with some greater hop flavor to balance the sugars.

Pours a dark mahogany, with a small off white head. The beer is thick and syrupy. Very juicy and slick. Aroma of sweet malt and dark fruit. Taste was average. Very sweet and juicy, some caramel and nuts. Hops are muted and lacking. A pretty unremarkable barleywine. Nothing to write home about.

This arrived wearing a nice dark ruby and red color. There's just a ring of head remaining, and there's no lace.
The smell was strangely weak, while the taste had a good amount of flavor. Sweet and potent malts dominate up front. Hops are mild but definitely present.
This could use a little more character.

Tasted at the 2003 Pizza Port Strong Ale Fest
Medium amber color, No head to speak of at all. Aroma is malty and fruity. A medium bodied barley wine. Malts are nutty and sweet. Touch of dark fruits. Hops are grapefruity. Smooth taste. Touch of alcohol bite. Not much else going on here. Sorry to say that this is a totally uninspired and totally unmemorable barley wine. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.
