bomber from Downeast in Portland, ME

a: served in a large chalice, deep maple brown in color, sustaining only a thin head

s: distinct sweet tree fruit - heavy date syrup, deep rich molasses aroma, complex and buttery dark rum, ginger can overtake a beer pretty quickly but it's fine here, and accompanied by some spicy herbal aromas that together add interest and provide a nice counter to the sweet fermentable side, rustic heavy cake, the nose sits really well with me

m: carbonation very low, nearly absent, with slick medium-full body

t: the flavor starts with rich-smoky-sweet blackstrap molasses and lots of dark sugars, dates, hits moderately sweet in the middle before the sugars slowly fade out, good ginger flavor, nicely blended and complimentary, with some gentle spiciness pulling through in the finish

o: the bottle suggests that aging may mellow things out, and maybe the time had done this some good, the ginger blends very well with the sweet molasses and dark fruit sugars, the nose really does it for me, but the rest ain't half bad either

Bomber, split 2 ways, poured into a pint glass.

A: Pours chestnut brown. Head is 2 fingers at first, sticks around but not as tall. Light beige foam.

S: Almost... tangy? at first whiff, but then I can identify it as ginger. Very spicy! Not at all like ginger ale or even fresh ginger, it most closely resembles the bite of pickled ginger they give you with sushi. Some sweetness and malt after I adjust to the spiciness, maybe a little raisin.

T: Again, the ginger overwhelms at first. It takes a long time for the molasses to hit, and it's not as strong as I expected. It's more dark sweetness than light sweetness, notes of what might be plum or raisin. The faintest trace of citrus, maybe orange but I can't tell.

M: Very fizzy! you can taste the alcohol but it doesn't take center stage-- more of a warming sensation in the back of my throat. The ginger makes it refreshing.

O: Very good beer, enjoyable for the winter/fall. Despite its dark color it does not sit too heavily in the stomach.

Dark brown to black color. Thin tan head that is quick to fizzle and leaves no manly lace. Looks like a cup of black coffee which I guess is kinda manly.

Smells stouty-y. Stout-ish? More of a sweet stout than a brown ale aroma but pleasant just the same. Molasses and some smoke.

Sweet woody, slightly smokey molasses. Maybe some ginger in the back? Probably not, I'm just projecting it there but something in this beer is definitely giving it a bourbon twang in back. Kinda flat, perhaps just English.

I didn't pick up much on the ginger and it tastes more like a sweet stout than a brown ale but a enjoyable just the same. A good log cabin beer.

A: The beer is clear yet very dark amber in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a thin off white head that quickly died down and only left a thin ring of bubbles on the surface around the edge of the glass.
S: There are moderate to strong aromas of ginger in the nose—the molasses doesn’t really make it to my nostrils.
T: Unlike the smell, the taste is a little more balanced but the ginger still stands out in the flavors and is much more prominent than the flavors of molasses.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and is somewhat smooth with a light to moderate amount of carbonation. The ginger contributes a bit of dryness to the aftertaste.
O: The beer could be a really good recipe if the balance was a little better and the ginger wasn’t as prominent in the smell and taste.

Appearance - a dark brown beer with garnet hues and one finger of beige head

Smell - dark brown sugar, molasses, toffee, cocoa, candied ginger

Taste - another good offering from in the manly men series of barley wines and high gravity beers and probably there best yet. This beer is round and full bodied with toasted grains and smoky sweetness molasses playing nicely off the burnt sugar and hop bitterness. As it warms up the ginger along with dried fruit, cherries, raisins, and spiced rum come out. Finish is long and slightly dry.

Mouthfeel - low carbonation heavy bodied, and cream feel. A little thin feeling in the back of the mouth though

Overall - this is there best beer besides the cadillac mountain stout which is listed as Bar Harbor Brewing but is owned by atlantic brewing. Worth a try for barley wine lovers shame it won't make it out of Maine.

22oz bomb, been sitting in the fridge a while - thanks blackie

appearance: pretty lifeless pour into a shaker pint, medium cola-brown body, light tan ring by very still.

smell: ginger, molasses, char

taste: i really like ginger - thats good because if i didnt this would be a drainpour. heavy on the ginger, molasses, char, black licorice. For a brown, it certainly doesnt fail at being interesting. I have no gripe with this - original and pretty well rounded

mouthfeel: ok, a little cloying, cola-esque, dry finish

drinkability: hindered by the mouthfeel, but not entirely

22oz bottle received in trade from the man, bennybrew. Thanks a heap!

Poured into an imperial pint, formed a 1/4" tan head above the cloudy burgundy brown brew. Head is quickly down to a skim with froth around the rim, leggy, with slow-falling lace. Aroma is sweet, with tinges of anise and sharp ginger tang.

Taste seems to break into distinct segments: dark sweetness to start; lemony ginger snap in the middle; close finds some mingling of those flavors, with a light alcohol fruitiness. Mouthfeel is smooth, thinner body than expected, and drinkability is pretty good. Pleasantly surprised by the flavors and how they worked together, not bad...

Pours a one finger light tan head that fades quickly leaving traces of lace. Deep, almost cloudy amber color. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied. Nose is molasses, flavor is almost sweet molasses with the ginger in the background. $11.30 for a 22oz bottle from Tully's Beer & Wine Wells, ME.

Ale brewed with molasses and ginger.

A: Midnight black color with a bubbly compact head that lapsed rather quickly with a skimpy lace.

S: Black licorice and scorched molasses on the open. Sweet burnt caramel comes though along with dark toffee and a light fresh roastiness. The strength is moderate, with a bit of dry sweetness but not enough to make me stand up to take notice or lick my lips in anticipation for the flavor.

T: Black licorice, burnt molasses with a deep roasted barley and tar like flavor. Rich and deep with a bit of light smoky charred wood, tobacco, and a smooth earthy roast bitterness. There seemed to be a light spiciness but could not say for sure if I detected the ginger which may have been well concealed by the dark nature of the drink. The finish is smooth of roasted barley and wet bread along with dark fruit (prunes) and alcohol. Interesting flavor, but a brown? eh. otherwise pretty good flavor.

M: thick and viscose, oily in texture with a warming of booze, roast and dark fruit.
The finish on the tongue is a smooth wet roasty lace of coffee roast and licorice.

D: Drinkability was decent, best suited for the chilly or colder weather. Big with a burnt sweetness and roasty bitterness makes for a decent level of consumption though a bomber is best and a coin toss decides another buy.

Good color, slightly astringent nose but that's the molasses coming through. Tastes clearly of molasses, duh, and actually tastes as if it should be stronger than the 7.6abv. It's smooth and pleasant, not one you'd forget. Overall I found it a good stand alone beer, one I wanted to share with friends.

The aromas are quite sticky and thick. Some rich tangy molasses and ginger with some slight alcohol.

The tastes are initially spicy and malty with some ginger, tangy molasses and alcohol. This beer is still surprising very dry. There is some burnt brown sugar and some very minor roasted malt notes, but clearly a brown. Mouthfeel is slightly cloying and unbalanced. Not a horrible brew, but just extremely complex, maybe too complex for its own good.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a thick frothy tan head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is decent. It has a well pronounced molasses and ginger scent along with a nice well rounded roasted and crystal malt aroma. It's sweet smelling with loads of buttery molasses and fresh ginger spice. The taste is decent as well. It's not a beer that you can drink easily, but you have to take it for what it is; a strong ale brewed with molasses and ginger. It's malted up with a crystal and roasted malts, but the molasses dominates the profile. The ginger comes through in the finish and adds some redeaming qualities. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a unique ale that's not gonna be attractive to most.
