The IPA style has seen a lot of twists and turns along its history. And one of those such adaptations happens at Ethereal Brewing as they sour an IPA and then slather that tangy bitterness with the racy character of tangerines.
Pale gold and shaded in a foggy haze, Tangerine Dreams releases a creamy white froth before gravitating toward the nose with a fresh peeled orange scent. Tangy hints of sour fruit come with a botanical citronella character. A light and mild mannered sweetness skirts the tongue with mild candy, wafer and fructose.
Any malt flavor that makes it to the middle palate is quickly relieved by the hops. Citrusy, tropical and tangy, a white grapefruit, guava, passionfruit and kiwi flavor backs up the generous tangerine additions for a succulent, zesty and refreshing taste. Trailing into a lime, yuzu and gooseberry late palate, the bitterness seems of freshly muddled grasses and herbs along with the fresh rinds of tangerine.
Medium light in body for a sour ale but quite dry for IPA, this dreamy beer finishes crisp, snappy and highly thirst quenching, but with an aggressive peppery bitterness, linked with astringency to cause the beer an off-clean taste and texture late. Its those peel, pith and rind character of tangerine that frames a long and spicy bitterness in aftertaste.
