Abuelita starts as our Russian imperial Stout, and then we give it a distinctly New Mexican twist. Chocolate and Caramel malt flavors are enhanced with cocoa, then we spike it with New Mexico Red Chile pods and cinnamon sticks- just like Grandma used to make!

Deep, dark body topped with a frothy, very soapy head; the bubbly head dissipates fairly quickly, leaving a thin, patchy glob of foam floating atop the body. Spicy aroma; hot pepper and cinnamon; some charred grain and cocoa. Chili and roasted grain flavors; spicy; light chocolate undertones. Heavy body yet slick and watery; fiery chili heat; some alcohol dryness.

It is too bad the look and mouthfeel don't match up with the smell and taste. The cinnamon, chili, and cocoa flavors are generally well-balanced and distinctive, especially in the aroma (the chili heat coming to the fore with the taste). Despite some appearance and mouthfeel deficiencies, this would be a fine beer to enjoy again and again.
