Drank on tap at The Answer Brewpub, Richmond, VA
Served in a stemless wine glass
Pitch black appearance. The beer looked super oily and viscous in the glass. There was no head or lacing whatsoever.
The aroma was outstanding and totally reminiscent of a Mounds candy bar. Huge toasted coconut presence. Loads of rich semisweet chocolate. Good amount of brown sugar sweetness too. Very dessert-like but not overly sweet. Coffee was also noticeable. Fragrant vanilla notes were apparent as well. Bit of maple. Slight booziness. Overall, amazingly rich and smooth.
The flavor profile was also spectacular. Coffee came through much stronger here. Super rich, smooth and robust. Huge coconut presence. Moderate brown sugar-like sweetness. Touch of roasted malts. Lots of maple but not too sweet. Hint of nuttiness. Some vanilla was also apparent. Slightly boozy on the back end and the finish. For a 14.5% ABV beer, however, the alcohol was remarkably well hidden. More roasted malts and lingering sweetness on the finish.
Fantastic, full bodied mouthfeel. Super creamy and smooth. The liquid contained a fine, moderate effervescence that turned frothy and slick on the palate.
I read amazing things about The Answer Brewpub’s imperial stouts, fruit-infused sour ales and fruited beer slushees prior to my visit here, and the hype turned out to be real. King Kahuna Double Barrel w/ JBM was phenomenal and reminded me of a less boozy and barrel forward, yet still amazingly flavorful and complex, BCBS variant. This beer alone made my trip to Richmond worth it.
