Drank from a Slushee machine at The Answer Brewpub, Richmond, VA
Served in a stemless wine glass
Smoothie-like appearance. Super thick and viscous. Light raspberry in color with some very light pink flecks throughout the body. There was no head or lacing whatsoever. Clingy patches of icy fruit purée stuck all along the glass.
Pineapple and coconut notes were most apparent in the aroma. This definitely smelled a lot like a piña colada and had little to no resemblance of any type of beer. Some sweet raspberry notes were detectable too. Maybe a touch of strawberry. Bit of milky, yogurt-like tartness. Somewhat basic perhaps but very solid.
The flavor profile was straight up raspberry flavored piña colada. Like the nose, this bore zero resemblance to a beer of any style, yet it was still amazing. Huge pineapple notes. Quite sweet. Big coconut presence too. A tangy yogurt-like quality came through on the back end. There was definitely a milky/lactose thing going on. Nice sweet-tart balance on the finish. Piña colada, raspberry and yogurt flavors lingered after the swallow.
The mouthfeel was exactly like a fruit smoothie. Uber thick and viscous. Slightly icy but silky smooth. Like the aroma and the flavor, completely unique and not at all reminiscent of any style of beer.
The definition of “beer” has been expanded so dramatically over the past few years that I feel unequipped to say what it can or cannot be. These fruit-infused “Andall Slushees” by The Answer Brewpub, however, definitely push the limits of my definition. Bottom line. Are they amazing? For sure.
