Four pack of cans. Canned on date of 03/28/22.
Pours a very slightly hazy golden, copper in color with a finger of frothy white head that dissipates over time and leaves lacing on the glass. Carbonation looks to be average. Inviting.
The overall aroma is fresh hops and a slightly sweet, candy maltiness with some herbaceousness in the background. Perhaps some creamed corn notes as it warms. Hop notes are floral and piney with a citrus kick. The aroma hints at some balance, which is probably to be expected with a 5.5% ABV IPA.
Taste follows the nose well. The fruitiness of the hops really shine, lots of citrus and lemon rind coming through. Some pine resin as well, especially towards the back end. The malts balance it throughout with some slight roastiness coming in right before the swallow. Lingering flavor is grapefruit rind and a hint of malt.
The mouthfeel is on the lighter side of medium bodied with a bit of creaminess. The carbonation is a zesty, maybe a tiny bit too zesty. Finishes slightly but not overly dry. A delight to drink, very sessionable and refreshing on a hot day.
Took a chance on this one as I've never had anything from this brewery, but I was intrigued by the promise of a Mexican style IPA and the 5.5% ABV, plus I've quite enjoyed other beers featuring Idaho 7 cryo hops and pilsen malts. It did not let me down, I quite enjoyed this one. I must say it is pretty unique. It sits somewhere between a session IPA and an American IPA while presenting a pretty unique malt profile for the category. Not sure if I would have guessed it was Mexican style without the hint on the packaging, but I can see what they were going for by essentially mashing a session IPA together with pilsner malts, quite frankly two of my favorite kinds of beer. I will be on the lookout for more from this brewery now. Cheers!
