Saisons are like the proverbial box of chocolates..never know what you're going to get.
Hazy , pale yellow colour
Rustic earthy malts, hints of the promised peppercorn spice
Label states spicy and peppery and this particular batch delivers. Some sweet malts with hints of rhubarb.
I'm definitely becoming a fan of this style. Fernie has, IMO, hit several correct notes with their interpretation of a style that can be interpreted in a lot of ways

Appearance - Pours a slightly hazy amber/orange with two fingers of foamy off white head.
Smell - fruity esters, yeast, spicy hops, black pepper, citrus fruits and barley malts.
Taste - The malts dominate the brew with some support from the yeast and hops. This brew has a pleasant orange peel flavour, but the black pepper is lost in translation.
Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes dry.
Overall - A saison that loses some of its key traditional flavour elements from the malts. Perhaps some re-work is needed.

In the realm of Saisons, this beer hits the mark for me. I prefer a saison to be a bit darker in character and taste. It pours copper in colour with a tuft of white foamy head. My tastebuds hit on the caramel malt and pepper notes, which I quite enjoy in a saison. It does feel a bit thin, so it's no world-beater. Overall, however, this is another respectable brew from one of my favourite little breweries.

650ml bottle, Fernie's current seasonal series offering.
This beer pours a slightly hazy, medium copper amber colour, with two chubby fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and wispy off-white head, which leaves some very random and patchy lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.
It smells of gritty and grainy pale malt, musty yeast, muddled orange citrus zest, a wee earthy funkiness, some ethereal black peppercorn spice, and very subtle leafy, weedy, and floral hop bitters. The taste is bready and mildly doughy pale and caramel malt, still hard to define citrus rind acerbities, wayward, and sort of phenolic yeast, aerosol black pepper dust, and a still plain weedy, herbal, and floral verdant hoppiness.
The bubbles are fairly understated in their not overly evocative frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and mostly smooth, as that typical yeast and spice intransigence doesn't seem to manifest here. It finishes off-dry, the bready malt and musty, almost stale orange fruitiness the order of the waning day.
Overall, this is kind of a disjointed version of the style - the fruit and spice additions obviously good on paper, but they somehow fail to find a connective balance in this brew - 'old barn' is an apt descriptor, and not in a particularly pleasant way. Ok, I suppose, and drinkable enough, but Fernie makes way better stuff.
