16 oz. Can from elixir 16 (in beautiful downtown troy) poured into a 16,oz. Nonic.

Pours
Very hazy orange (think thin orange juice) >1 finger large bubble soapy head ,fades to a nice ring around glass with small islands of thin white .

Nose is tropical fruits heavy on the grapefruit, pine, grass and some lite flowers .

Taste is orange, grapefruit, grassy and a little pine .

Mouth feel is medium carbonation, citrus twang, with a slight hoppy bite in the throat .

I commend the brewers on this one, easy drinking, exactly what I would expect from a NEIPA, plenty of citrus and a hoppy brightness.

One that I'll be having again I'm sure.

Common Roots is a name I've generally associated with pretty-good IPAs that sometimes come out way better than I think they will... Bright Light and Good Fortune, for example, are both excellent hoppy beers by this lesser-known NY brewery who generally does nice work. Figured I'd pick up a single can of this to give it a shot. Original Concept is a normal strength IPA double dry-hopped with Citra, Mosaic, and El Dorado varietals. The can describes it as pushing "bursts of orange marmalade, white grapefruit, and juicy tangerine," so I'm expecting a very citrusy beer here. Also, I appreciate the somewhat-snarky name and label.

The pour is an opaque, somewhat dingy-looking but characterful deep orange hue with very little in terms of highlights when held to direct light. The head is slow to form, but steadily climbs up to a solid finger-and-a-half with good legs. Some decent lacing here for sure, and the surface is moderately hazed-over as well. Gonna go ahead and say this one looks pretty good.

El Dorado hops are one of those newer varietals that typically needs some help from the other hops in the recipe to really do it for me. The idea of combining them with the awesome Mosaic/Citra combo is a good idea, to be sure, as the first sniffs of this that I take are bright and punchy, with grassiness and strong dank pine overtones meshing well with some light cantaloupe, aggressive citrusy (tangelo/grapefruit/orange) elements, and a little bit of tropical papaya here and there. Definitely a good impression.

Shockingly citrusy on the tongue, even though I should have prepared myself for that. This is very flavorful for an under-7% IPA, with a big hit of nectarine, white grapefruit, tangelo/tangerine, peach, and earthy dankness from the Mosaic toward the finish. Juicy finish with what I consider a very good use of El Dorado. It has the unique and interesting characteristics of the hop (stone fruit, uncommon tropical fruit, melon) set against the standby aromatics and flavors of Mosaic/Citra working well in concert. The feel is smooth and supple with a smooth carbonation and a lingering, classy, non-aggressive bitterness in the finish. Would definitely drink this one again. These guys are starting to get really good.
