Southern Tier Brewing Co. "Nice Slice"
12 fl. oz. can "BEST BY09/26/22 LKW22055112728FL" and sampled on 07/18/22
$1.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: It's poured a clear golden body beneath a finger's width of white foam. The aroma displays watermelon but it doesn't seem authentic ~ and the label bears that out reading "SESSION ALE WITH NATURAL WATERMELON FLAVOR". I'm not even sure how "watermelon" it is. There's some watermelon, but there's also some apple, and some melon other than watermelon. It's OK though, it's just smells a little like hard candy. On to the taste... well, unfortunately that hard candy flavor remains and that basically ruins it for me. It's way too far from authentic for me given that I've tasted watermelon beers that actually taste like watermelon. I understand it, this is what people want, but that doesn't make it good. I say great, give the people what they want, make some money, but that's kind of selling out in a way. I don't think I'd even drink this ice cold on a hot summer day, and on that note, it doesn't have a whole lot of carbonation to it either. It's medium bodied, and with a moderate carbonation level and all of the residual sugars it seems flabby. I'd want it zesty and crisp but hey, maybe that's just me. The head retention and lacing are a let-down as well. The head came up nice but then it dropped just as easily and now I've got just a thin collar. Lacing? There's a few spots where the head first formed but that's it. Southern Tier usually nails stuff like this but I feel they've missed the mark on this one.

12 ounce can poured into a tulip glass. Best by 3/26/22, so fairly old.
L---Clear golden color with a medium white head that faded quickly down to a ring and left decent lacing.
S---Watermelon Jolly Rancher. Not real watermelon, artificial & chemically.
T---Follows the nose. Artificial watermelon.
F---Heavier than you would think a session watermelon beer would be. Decent carbonation.
O---Not good. Too much of a chemical thing going on with the watermelon.

This is better than say, Heavy Melon by New Belgium but not very good or noteworthy. Artificial watermelon up front that fades into this grainy soggy frankenberry flavor. Kinda pissed I got a whole pack but I knew what I was getting into with this brewery so it is what it is. Basically another dud from here for me.
In retrospect this review sounds harsh from how I remember the beer now. It's still basically unremarkable but I mean I'd drink it if I was given one for sure

Poured from a12 oz. can. Has a golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of sweet watermelons. Taste is watermelon, less sweet than the aroma, wheat is present, easy drinking. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a unique and decent beer.

Translucent gold with slight orange tint. One finger of white head, that leaves a thin ring and no lacing.
Smell is watermelon, that of candy, soda, juice, etc., not exactly fresh watermelon.
Taste is watermelon, slight dry bready flavor, and an unfortunate finishing flavor that comes across as artificial sweetener.
Feel is light, with moderate carbonation tingle.
Overall, that artificial sweetener flavor kills any enjoyment that I might have gotten from this beer. It had some promise, but didn't quite deliver. Glad I only got a single, as I couldn't even finish the one. Next!

Pretty straightforward artificial watermelon candy flavor with some decent malts to balance. Nothing too offensive just super gimmicky. Not sure I would revisit.

12oz can poured into a snifter
Pours a clear golden color with a pink hue, one finger foamy white head. Smells of gusher candies, watermelon candy, passionfruit, a hint of sweet malt. Tastes of watermelon juice, gummy rings, a hint of sweet malt. Medium-light body with moderate carbonation, foamy mouthfeel and crisp finish. I very nice summer time session ale

From the bottom of the can: "BEST BY 10/05/21 LKW21095073838FL"
Appearance: The body of the beer is a medium-dark shade of amber. It has a thick, whipped cream looking head that is slightly off white. Good retention and lacing.
Aroma: It smells orange slice gummy candy, and a bit like cotton candy at times. There is a bit of peach that comes through from time to time as well.
Taste: Up front it tastes like gummy worms. Towards the middle it tastes like artificial sweetener and wheat. The wheat character is pretty nice but there's a strange artificial sweetener character which is off-putting.
Mouthfeel: It has a thin body that is light and feels wet overall. Carbonation feels a tad low for the beer.
Overall: The can states that this is a "SESSION ALE WITH NATURAL WATERMELON FLAVOR." The beer doesn't smell or taste like watermelon at all, whether it's a real watermelon or a Jolly Rancher. This beer smells like orange slice gummy candy and tastes like gummy worms for the most part. What really kills the beer is this odd artificial sweetener flavor which is completely out of place in a beer. There is a light bit of wheat character which is nice but as a whole the beer was a swing and a miss. I wouldn't drink it again and I wouldn't recommend it.

Pours clear, gold in color with one inch head.Taste is big watermelon, rind, rosewater, and wheat. Light bodied, slightly sweet, high carbonation. Nice straightforward watermelon beer. Not as sweet as I would have expected. Really easy to drink. Nice warmer weather beer.
