Aged in French Oak Port or Cab/Sav. Wine barrels, this brew’s funkified flavors can be attributed to the addition of Oregon tart cherries. You’ll have to taste it to believe it. The Funky Virtue, born 3rd Virtue Belgian Tripel defies common perceptions of beer flavor. Aged in a French Oak Port or Cab/Sav. Wine barrels inoculated with the wild and mystical Brettanomyces yeast. Oregon tart cherries were then added to the Funky cask. Over the course of the roughly twelve+ months in the barrel, all the remaining sugar was consumed by the Brett and the fruit diffused into pure liquid cherry pie. Cheers! 2012 NABA Gold Medal Winner

Served on tap in a snifter

Appearance – The beer is served a lightly hazed reddish amber color with a smell head of fizzy white foam. The head fades relatively quickly, leaving a trace of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer is strongest of a grassy and haylike smell mixed with a great deal of yeastiness. Along with these aromas comes some smells of a wine like fruitiness as well as a little bit of an oak smell. Overall a little bit tangy and funky, just as the name would suggest.

Taste - The taste begins with a nice hit of a sweeter cherry and fruity sweetness upfront with a good leave of yeasty and white wine like flavors. While lighter upfront, oak and a grapey tannin flavor develop more and more as the taste advances with the sweeter flavors fading ever so lightly. All while this happens, a bit more dry cherry flavor as well as a little booze which create a rather slowing sipping tart and sour fruit wine flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly thinner side for the + 10 % abv. of the brew with it containing a carbonation level that is rather average to a little bit lighter. Not bad, but a little higher carbonation may have matched the funky and fruit flavors a bit better. Overall it was OK.

Overall – A pretty nice sour-wine like hybrid overall. A pretty good one to try if you get a chance as it makes for a rather nice slower sipper overall.

Brenda and I picked this up after a harrowing 90+ MPH drive between Big Sky and Bozeman. Spencer at Lone Peak told me that there were a bunch of one-off's and "special" beers at the Bozone and we drove very dangerously to get there ... We got in about 5 after 8:00 pm... A wonderful lady at the bar couldn't give us a taste.. in fact she said she wouldn't sell us a growler of this beer because she was worried we wouldn't like it.. after a bit of coaxing.. she filled a growler with this wonderful beer and the IIPA they also had on tap... Thanks a ton.. We'll try to make it in before closing next time :-)

This was shared at the Montana Growler Beer tasting on 7/25/09.. and it was far and away my favorite and the hit of the show.

Good carbonation and head as it is poured into my La Trappe goblet.. no lace but the brew is a deep amber with some nice red highlites when held to a light.

Nose is fruity with some surprising tannic elements.. I was expecting more of a Flanders style.. but this is American Wild for sure.. not really Acetic at all.. Just nice and fruity...

Flavor makes me think of a slightly sweet port .. plenty of vinous characteristics.. but the background cherries and again.. tannic (plum skin) helps balance and make for a very interesting brew... as it warms a little more oaky qualities come to the front... the sour is a bit mild but more than present and helps tie all the elements into a nice and tidy bow.

Really pretty complex... This was the brew that I wanted my boise homies to sample... Good and verging on very damn good... I doubt the week in the growler did any damage.. but seriously... I want to know if Todd pulls anything close to this one out of his taps... seriously.. ;-) I'll pay for the shipping!!
