Get ready to indulge in the Leckerschmecker Kölsch, a traditional German brew with a smooth malt character and a delightful blend of woody and floral aromas. This easy-drinking session ale is perfect for any occasion.
Kölsch beers are traditionally made in Cologne (Köln), Germany and served in 200 mL cylindrical stange glasses by a server called a Köbes. 200 mL goes down fast so Köbes are very busy!

473 mL can, Day 1 of Nita Beer's 2024 Advent Calendar; dated Oct 16 2024 and served barely chilled. With a handful of exceptions, Eastern Ontario craft beers generally do not make it this far west in the province - indeed, I've never seen a Nita beer in the wild locally. So this calendar seemed like an ideal pick, as it's virtually assured that I'll be unfamiliar with most, if not all of its contents.
Pours a crystal clear pale golden yellow colour, kicking up one finger of loose, frothy white head that fizzles within a minute or two. A tight collar and filmy cap live on, with arcs of sticky lace generated after each sip - looks fine so far. A little doughy on the nose, with notes of bready malts & grains, honey and herbal, grassy hops. Fairly clean, wholesome aroma.
The flavours follow the nose: bready, doughy malts and digestive biscuits, with a faint hint of honey sweetness. Herbal, floral noble hops come forward on the back end, adding just enough bitterness to counteract the malt profile; finishes with a touch of sourdough bread before trending off-dry in the aftertaste. Light in body, with moderate carbonation that gently prickles the tongue; smooth mouthfeel with excellent drinkability.
Final Grade: 3.63, a B grade. Leckerschmecker is not only the first beer in Nita's 2024 beer calendar, it's also the very first Nita beer I've ever had the chance to try. I wouldn't necessarily say that this is a great example of its style... but it's still a serviceable German-style brew, and I'm always down for one of those. I'd probably buy this once in a while if given the opportunity - not bad for an introductory brew. Cheers to 23 more!
