a big belgian quad packed with blackberries, a creative and well executed beer, i liked all i drank in here. this isnt as heavy in body as i expected it to be, perhaps the berries lighten it up some, it has all the classic flavors of abbey malts and candy sugar and nuances of raisin and brown sugar but the berries make it crazy unique, jammy and sweet, natural enough, kind of wintery and hearty to me, with a lot of penetration, they are evident all the way through this, and the really transform this into something quite unique. i feel it would be a little underwhelming without the fruit, a bit thin in feel, sort of generically sweet, and without a very dramatic belgian yeast character, just mildly estery and sort of plain to me. the berries through really add complexity, giving a port wine element to it, pulling up things like anise and bran from the malt, and pepper and jam from the yeast. the alcohol is pretty exposed here, this is downright boozy, but the flavors are excellent and the carbonation is high which helps it drink. there is also some really light acidity in here from the fruit that cuts the sugar at just the right incident. a brilliant piece of design work or a happy accident, it really doesnt matter. overall a really fun take on a quad, they did a great job with it!
