Appearance: Got it poured with a solid finger and a half of head that left rings of lacing throughout the beer. The body is a dark red boasting ample carbonation and while the head did stick around, it began to bow out a little bit after the halfway point.
Smell: Lots of malt upfront, as caramel and toffee that didn't need a lot of warming to come out with a slight hint of tea and herbs. Could be a bit stronger, but nothing really to complain about.
Taste: The bitterness of the beer seems to come upfront at the start of the beer, and it comes off as a bit peculiar. It's not hoppy, but there's something there that seems to make it bitter as it competes with the sweeter malt. It's like a excessively steeped tea note, but that doesn't feel like a description that quite gives it justice. Regardless, the malt then takes control of the experience with a rich, robust flavour which fades with a light herbal dusting of hops that reigns it all in.
Mouthfeel: Where some beers tend to cling as you drink for of them, and build an aftertaste, this one seems to start with a bit of potency that later dulls to the level you want it and seems to stay there. Smooth and creamy, transitions well after a bit of a rocky start with a mild aftertaste.
Drinkability: Smooth and after the initial fifth of the beer, starts to ease up. Has a slight dryness to it, but refreshing and interesting enough to overcome it. On the lighter end of medium bodied. Sits down in my stomach well and the carbonation isn't excessive or under performing here.
Final Thoughts: I'm very pleased that this brewer didn't do the thing so many craft brewers do, and make some absurdly hopped IPA as their second beer. This is just an all around solid red, although a bit mild compared to most which I suppose is niche of it's own. It's a bit peculair, but I'd be happy to buy it again. If I had to make a criticism, I think a bit more malt is in order on this one, both to maybe add some sweetness and maybe slightly raise the ABV, but I'm not a brewmaster, so not quite sure if that would accomplish the intended effect. A solid offering regardless, Thumbs up.
