Sea Farmer hits the glass with a beautiful marriage between salinity, hoppy, and grapefruit; no one component overpowering the others. Citrus additions to Westcoast IPAs were once seen as cutting edge, then quicker than Usain Bolt trying to find a bathroom with the squirts, they became overdone, poorly made, and passé as all hell. But much like M. Night Shyamalan movies, just because a lot are a miss doesn't mean there aren't absolute bangers mixed in there too; and we think Sea Farmer is one of the latter. Crisp, bright, salty, grapefruity, hoppy, and soaked in the traditions of West Coast IPA, Sea Farmer has everything we want in an IPA we plan on crushing in the summer heat.

Reminds me, actually, of some sort of cocktail with bitter orange liqueurs or amaro in it. A floral bergamot finish in the midst of a west coast IPA. The salt just gives it a balancing minerality. Unique and awesome.

Sort of the epilogue to Grapefruit Sculpin, maybe? Truth be told, I like the brewer's contributions to that beer more than this, though that's not at all to say this is a bad beer. The salt is there, not oceany, just punctuating the hops. On that point, though, the hop combo feels a touch more tropical here, the grapefruit not as brisk and refreshing as BP's, making this a bit fuller, a bit fruitier, certainly less dry. I like it, but I'd take (at least the original recipe) GF Sculpin first.

I had this beer and thought about it all week. Really - all week. I couldn't stop thinking about the sea salt as part of the citrus taste. Crazy combination, but it worked!!!

Draught pour at Davis Beer Shoppe into a tulip glass. Pours a golden orange with a thin layer of head that left some lacing. Nose as expected is all grapefruit and very enjoyable. Taste matched the nose, didn't notice the sea salt addition. Good mouthfeel, solid carbonation, and a pleasant slightly citrus bitter finish with perhaps a slight hint of saltiness. Will definitely grab this again whenever I see it, can't wait to try more Fieldwork offerings!

On tap at Whole Foods Blossom Hill in San Jose
Pours a pale/medium yellow with a light head.
Smell of grapefruit immediately hits the nose.
This is confirmed on taste. The grapefruit is everywhere.
If you like grapefruit, this is your beer. To me, the grapefruit kind of overwhelms everything else.
