Formerly Sonoma Pride

Hops = Simcoe & Eureka

Hey Kirby, I’m currently way too wasted on box-wine and jazz cabbage to write tasting notes for the new beer. Just tell people it’s called Tactical Hatchet. It’s kind of high in ABV for an IPA but that gives it more body from the glycerols and oats and dark malted wheat and stuff. We used Simcoe and Eureka hops, kind of a weird pairing, but we got lucky on pairing them the first time out so we’re doing it again. Notes of guava, pine, citrus, Kerns canned juice, and Jeff Spicoli’s VW bus. So it’s kind of the exact opposite of this cardboardeaux I’m drinking now. I’m sure someone is going to see 7.7% IPA with Simcoe and Eureka, and without reading this they’ll comment and ask if it’s the same beer as our Sonoma Pride beer. It is, but don’t confirm it, lie and say it’s a peanut butter and pineapple DIPA or something. Also, please proofread the notes for me cause I’m 3/4 of a box in and was way more focused on watching Gilmore Girls the entire time I wrote this email. You’re the best, Thanks!

Had this as beer #3 in a flight purchased in Berkeley. This one was a heartier yellow/gold than the previous samples, bordering into more of a light amber/orange feel. 2/5" white head. Aroma was ok, Simcoe and Eureka tend to be bittering hops I think, so that would explain why this didn't have a bigger yield in the nose like most of their beers with aroma hops. Pronounced bitterness in the nose.

That pronounced bitterness keeps banging away in the taste and mouth feel. But it also helps get that back end dryness. A little bit of non pine tree bitterness, I guess that is Eureka. Grapefruit, the usual suspect. It does hide the alcohol nicely. This is a nice beer that doesn't rely on Citra or Mosaic, something you don't see a lot with the new breweries making hazebro beers. I'd buy a $25/6 pack of it once.

On tap at Fieldwork Brewing in Berkeley

A: Pours hazy golden amber with a frothy off white head that settles to a light layer and leaves some nice lacing.

S: Spicy resinous pine and herbal notes lead the way with some of underlying tropical fruit, a little citrus, biscuity malt, and caramel sweetness.

T: Citrus and tropical fruit, passion fruit, grapefruit, lemon, and tangerine, big spicy pine presence, slight dank herbal notes, biscuity malt, and caramel sweetness.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation, soft, but with a really nice bite of bitterness and spice.

O: A lot of hazy IPAs have trouble negotiating the line between bitterness and juice. This does it beautifully. Real nice change of pace from the same old flavor profile.

Growler pour into a tulip.

L: Murky dirty bronze with 1+ finger of sandy head with moderate retention and left ringed/windshield lacing.

S: Tropical and dank, peach, guava, tangerine, subtle pine and plenty of earthy dank goodness. Loved it, just wished it popped a bit more.

T: Follows nose well but with more citrus contribution and perhaps some slight yeast tanginess. Finishes with mild bitterness and moderate astringency, both linger a bit as does the yeast tanginess.

F: Medium-high bodied, medium carbonation, tingly on the tongue, drying of the tongue on the swallow from the astringency and yeast.

O: A solid brew though perhaps still a bit green, will see how the cans evolve and revisit this review if necessary
