We were incredibly lucky to get to take part in a project with Great Western Malt over the past year detailing every part of the process of the malt in Grain In Vain from sewing seeds to seaming cans. We traveled to Idaho to see our barley growing in the fields, toured the facility where it would be malted and stored, and tracked the grains' voyage from Pocatello Idaho all the way to our brewhouse in Berkeley. As well we brewed this Double IPA solely with Simcoe hops from Perrault Farms in Toppenish Washington and you can see all of the details that go into producing world class grains and hops by scanning the QR code on the front of Grain In Vain's label. We're extremely pleased with how this beer showcases the quality of ingredients these farmers grow, and the result is a Double IPA with a clean almost honey-like grain platform and an all new Simcoe flavor profile we haven't gotten from years past; with almost Citra-like notes of lemon candies and orange zest with slightly more traditional Simcoe notes hovering in the background with wafts of white grapefruit, passion fruit, and lemongrass tea.

1st review of this beer on BA. This might have been the beer back in the Summer of 2020 that convinced me that I was going to significantly limit my purchase of Fieldwork beers. Was it bad? No. Let's get into the totality of circumstances here already.
Pours a lightly hazy dark yellow to light amber with 1/3" white head. It is not a particularly attractive beer. The aroma was mild in terms of aroma hops. A light bittering hop presence with the feel of dehydrated grapefruit rind to it. Has a grain aroma too, but nothing special if you didn't tell me about it in that regard. Underwhelming relative to cost ($5 or 6 a can).
Taste imparts a strange amount of perceived woodiness despite no wood being used in this beer's production. Is it the specialty malt? I dunno. Large bitterness brought about in Simcoe ways. But there is a lot more taste wise going on not owing anything to the hops. I found the commercial tug job about clean honey malt to be quite different in my experience.
