Sometimes, there are people you can't help but have an undying affinity for. Such is the case with all the wonderful humans at both Mikerphone Brewing and Great Notion Brewing. Since everyone was in town for the Invitational, we thought, "Hey, let's get crazy and make a stout that combines the best elements of all three!" Hence, Breakfast for Three was born (we tried to combine the names, but to no avail...Smells Like Double Stackromatic? Stacking Achro Beans? Oof.)
It is exactly what you'd expect: a thick, sticky 10.5% ABV stout packed full of maple syrup and Peruvian coffee roasted locally at Zoe's. Your breakfast beer has arrived.

16 oz. can. Black body. Smells of coffee and maple. Tastes of coffee and maple, but very strong coffee. A touch of green pepper to the coffee. Sweet maple. Medium body. Not really heavy or chewy. It's pretty sweet, without being heavy. Does not taste like 10.5%.

LOOK - dark dark dark - black - maybe a hint of brown - 1-2 finger head - decent retention for the style - stays decent with activity
SMELL - coffee - toffee - molasses - chocolate - charred wood
TASTE - bitter coffee and chocolate get shoved in your face - there may be some hops in there but not easily picked out - gets really sweet and rich with caramel and maple syrup - sweetness slowly fades and you are left with more coffee and a smoky grain goodness
FEEL - a decent full bodied beer - not quite as thick and oily as I expected but decent - a decent amount of carbonation sticks around, but would like a bit more carbo
OVERALL - Another amazing beer from WeldWorks - very rich - very flavorful - complex - bought this as a single, but would gladly buy a 4 pack (16oz.) - this would make a great syrup to put over ice cream - a must try

Appearance: thick when poured with almost no carbonation. Immediately after being poured, the beer appears flat. Dark brown in color, almost like chocolate syrup.
Aroma: coffee is the headliner. The maple is evident too. The combination smells wonderful. Sweet smelling, like a coffee house/bakery combo.
Flavor: sweet, bordering on too much so. The coffee is well done. Pronounced, but not overwhelming – a mellow dark roast. The maple is comes through well, but play second fiddle to the coffee.
Mouthfeel: heavy-medium.
Overall: Well done. This is a great base. I’d love to try this in other variants. My hats off to WW. Many of the pastry stouts are overdone with everything-but-the-kitchen-sink ingredients. Breakfast For Three is a much simpler recipe, and well executed. One of the better off-the-shelf Weldwerks stouts.

Canned 3 weeks ago.
Pours near-black with two fingers of fluffy tan head.
The nose features big mocha with earthy coffee depth and a whiff of pancakes in the background. Faint metal and ash around the edges.
The taste is like a very good cup of coffee with maple on the finish. Hints of milk chocolate, black licorice, and cherry.
The mouthfeel is medium+ and silky. More like 8.5% ABV than 10.5% in a good way.
Overall, this seems to be a somewhat polarizing beer, but I really enjoyed it. It's definitely for coffee lovers. It's more of a complex coffee stout than a maple pastry stout.
