had higher hopes for this one, cocoa from ecuador in a simple milk stout base, but there is some slop to this, its chalky feeling, bitter, a little burnt tasting to me, and not as polished as anticipated, a stark contrast to their gorgeous decor in this place, really one of the weaker offerings on their beer list when we were in, although the folks i was with did like it more than i did. close to black and a little thin looking, some dusty sediment visible in the right light, fast fading head. the nose is chocolate forward and earthy which is nice, and this really isnt overdone on the lactose, a common pitfall in these, but the malt character is lacking, both in terms of the dark barley flavor depth and also in terms of the body and texture more generally, it feels a little watered down, and lacks back end bitterness and complexity, grounding, and balance. notes of leather, milk chocolate, and dirt, scorched coffee too, and a little bit of sharpness which is not befitting of the style, and the smoothness from the lactose is largely lost. subtle cola or something as it warms too, not tidy in the ferment, and amateurish to me in a degree that none of their other beers were. needs some real cleaning up to hit like it should...
