i think its great to see what appears to be an adjunct free imperial stout, how rare is that these days, where everyone has to make a dessert thing or put theirs in barrels, i almost appreciate and seek something like this out more now because of its seeming impending extinction from the american brewing lexicon. sad. in any event, this is pretty solid, rich and frothy, dark brown but not black, and with a light shine to it in the glass. deep roasty aroma but some obvious chocolate type malts too, simple really with a yeast strain i can taste, english ale maybe, but not overly developed in the flavor, or perhaps crowded out by some of the roasted coffee notes, some bitterness there in the finish, but also some sweetness, this could be a tad drier than it is, but its hard to complain with a little extended grain character in a beer like this, its far from being sugary. deep and robust enough to be wintery, but also not so heavy in body and alcohol that it only applies when its cold and dark out. well made beer overall, nice to see this approach to the style again...
