Staring Down The Sun balances the tangy sweetness of clementine with the tart acidity of a sour ale. The result is a clean, juicy, and citrusy brew that will shine brightly on your palate.

At Gastropub on Erie Street East in nearby downtown Windsor; on tap and chilled, 4oz. in a flight of four beers. My third beer from the Whitchurch-Stouffville brewery, and first for 2025.

355 mL can from the LCBO; dated Mar 12 2021 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a very hazy golden-orange colour, topped with nearly a finger of frothy, soapy white suds that are in a hurry to be someplace else. Within sixty seconds, it has fizzled off entirely, leaving the surface utterly barren - no cap or lacing, not even a thin collar to speak of. Not much to look at, but the aroma is pleasant enough - I'm getting lactic acid, lemon yogurt and orange pulp, with suggestions of grainy wheat malts and stone fruits.
It's a pretty straightforward lacto sour, but I can't say it's not tasty. Flavours of clementine and wheaty grains come through initially, with a fair bit of sharp, lactic acidity present throughout most of the sip. Finishes with more orange flesh and peel, with a touch of earthiness preceding a moderately sour aftertaste with the lacto character dissipating within a moment or two, leaving behind only a faintly tart hint of orange on the taste buds. Light in body, with aggressive carbonation that prickles and prods the palate continuously with each sip, resulting in a very crisp, slightly frothy texture. As easy to drink as any fruit sour, i.e. one serving is easy to plow through, but I don't know if I'd be interested in multiples.
Final Grade: 3.86, a B+. Staring Down the Sun Clementine Sour is good enough to be worth a look, but I don't know if I'd call it a 'great' fruit sour. The clementine is easily discernible, but I still would've appreciated a little bit more intensity/juiciness from that aspect of the flavour profile. All in all, if you're in the market for a citrusy kettle sour then you could do much worse than this - I'd pick this up again if I were in the mood, and I'd also encourage other BAs to give it a try, should they have the opportunity to do so.

355 ml can served cold into a pint glass. LCBO purchase for about $3.75 CDN. Canned March 27, 2020.
Appearance - Mildly hazy peachy orange colored brew with golden highlights. Lots of bubbles within the glass and a fizzy half finger of head is formed and fizzles away in moments.
Smell - definitely orange and clementine with some subtle rich sweet citrus notes. Wheaty quality backing things up.
Taste - Tart and somewheat sour but in a citrusy good way. Lots of clementine and orange flavor here. Wheaty backbone as well. Touch of lemon mixed in.
Mouthfeel - Medium-light bodied, good carbonation, rich fulfilling finish (some might say juicy even) but then a light residual aftertaste.
Overall - Solid and tasty wild ale, quite refreshing and definitely a summertime treat. WIll probably look for it this summer.
