A Freudian Slip is an unintentional error revealing your subconscious feelings. A Freudian Sip is our brand-new Vienna Lager. When your partner asks “what are you up to?” you may just blurt out “going to Muddy York” instead of “Home Depot” and we can’t blame you. You don’t need a degree in psychoanalysis to see that this smooth, malty, and slightly toasty, copper-coloured lager is what you really desire.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, from my favourite LCBO at The Roundhouse Centre in nearby Windsor. My second beer from the Whitchurch-Stouffville, Ontario brewery.

473 ml can served cold into a pint glass. LCBO purchase for around $3.75 CDN. Canned August 28, 2023.
Appearance - Clear coppery beer with nearly two fingers of loose and short-lived off-white head. Some visible effervescence and no lacing to speak of.
Smell - Plenty of grain, some fall aromas and a sweet caramel note that sits there. Orchard fruit also in play.
Taste - Biscuity grain with a touch bitterness towards the end. Underlying sweet caramel and a definitely some rather toasty malts underneath which adds to the depth of flavor.
Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, carbonation is pretty light, some astringent sensation on the tongue well after a sip.
Overall - Pretty solid Vienna lager with the underlying toasted malts being the distinguishing feature here that bumps it up a couple of notches. Certainly worth a purchase while the assuredly limited run is in stock.

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Sep 6 2023 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a clear orange-amber colour, fitted with a crown of creamy, foamy, off white head nearly two fingers high. It steadily melts off, reduced to a tight collar and filmy cap within three or four minutes' time - not a lot of lace production, but it looks attractive in the glass. The aroma consists of toasted grains & biscuits, with grassy hay, floral, earthy hops and light caramel.
A well-rounded lager: I'm getting toasted malts, which impart flavours of caramel, toasted grains & nuts, as well as a bready, biscuity sweetness. Hints of herbal, spicy hops and grassy, earthy bitterness rise up at the finish, followed by a mildly malty aftertaste that fades to off-dry. Light in body, with assertive carbonation that feels crisp and prickly on the tongue; the smooth, satisfying mouthfeel serves this malt-forward lager very well. I know it's officially festbier season, but this 5% Vienna-style lager might be a better session option.
Final Grade: 3.92, a B+. Muddy York's Freudian Sip is a darn good stab at the Vienna lager style, beating out the bulk of the Ontario-brewed alternatives I have tried over the years. Not too sweet, with a rich, varied malt profile balanced by robust noble hop flavours - very quaffable, and just a pleasure to gulp in general. It's also an excellent local alternative to Boston Lager, which has been increasingly challenging to find around here in recent years.
