Up until the Second World War, dark beer was the predominant beer type in the Munich area. The hard water found in the region played a special role in producing this specialty. In his book “Beer International”, the world-renowned English beer writer, Michael Jackson, accurately describes the Ayinger “Altbairisch Dunkel” as: “A good example of its kind. Impenetrably dark with a golden-brown gleam when held up to the light, and with a warm aroma and malty taste, while summoning up coffee taste sensations on going down. It is brewed from five types of malt (two of which are torrified dark), and it is only lightly hopped.” It is produced using the traditional double fermentation process.

A: Pours a dark ruby/brown color. A dense beige head forms, rising to over two fingers. Good retention and some lace left behind.
S: It takes a little bit to open up. Once this warms, all the baked bread goodness come out that I love. Soft brown bread, doughy malts. A bit of toffee in the nose as well. Wonderful.
T: Like the nose, that nuanced malt character is amazing. Its like walking into a bakery. Doughy malts, brown bread. Toffee, a bit of dark fruits, just enough earthy hops to balance.
M/O: A medium body, a moderate carbonation. Soft and velvety smooth. Finishes on a sweeter note, but not cloying at all. Downed in big gulps, and am wondering how I finished it so quickly. Looking for more.
This is one were it really helps to let this warm. As it opens up beautifully. As usually for Ayinger, the malt character is on another level. This is the first time I have seen this on the shelf around me, I don't know why this has been hiding from me, but I'll be searching it from now on.

Dark copperish brown, clear, tan head.
Smells of cooked dark fruit, think prunes and raisins. My step grandmother used to cook mincemeat pies at Christmas, it brought back that 40+ year old memory for me.
Tastes similar to the smell but the fruit is not as pronounced. The finish is amazing, it’s like after you swallow a drink of the best coffee you ever had. I can’t really think of anything I’d want them to change, it’s excellent.

I personally don't drink dark beers all that often but this was surprisingly good. This was my 2nd dark beer ever and i was impressed by the flavor. Very smooth flavor and it goes down great. I've had vanilla porter for example and it just hits awfully and maybe im a wuss. But this beer suprised me and it makes me want to trt more dark beers. I think they did a great job. Very smooth

Smooth does begin to describe this readily available import. All malt, but not so sweet as to spoil the taste & mouthfeel. Perfectly matched to a cool early-Fall session.

Very smooth drinking dunkel with just a tinge of bitterness at the end. Not much on the nose.

Poured on a stein glass.
Dark with a bit of mahogany/brown colour at the end of the foam.
When I heard people talking about the beer as "liquid bread"... This one was the clearest definition for that.
Taste of malty toasted bread, with dark chocolate, nutty flavour at the end. A little bit of herbal hop just to balance.
Amazing beer.

500 ml bottle - no clear packaging date.
Pours a clear dark mahogany colour with two fingers of creamy tan coloured head.
Aroma is toasty with some caramel, a touch of coffee and hints of cocoa - a bit of earthy hop.
Bready toasty malt on the palate, again a bit of caramel, nutty, and subtle chocolate; coffee with a gentle earthy bitterness on the finish.
Smooth, slightly creamy medium mouthfeel; average carbonation with a clean finish.
Very tasty, though a little less vibrant than had hoped.

It’s a good beer. Dark amber. Notes of malt and bread. Almost some toffee and tootsie roll. Some raisin to it as well. It’s not my favorite but I love it.
