473 mL can from the LCBO; coded May 17 2021 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a clear golden yellow colour, producing one finger of soapy, sudsy white head that disintegrates within a minute or two. An impressive coat of sticky lace is left in its wake, in addition to a frothy collar and filmy cap - looks attractive in a glass, and indistinguishable from a craft lager at a glance. The aroma is fairly muted, offering up hints of stone fruit, lemon, and maybe a touch of passion fruit.
A subtle, nuanced sour that I found enjoyable - wheaty grains are the backdrop, with hints of tropical and stone fruit coming through, reminiscent of peach, passion fruit and mandarin orange. Hints of lemon, lychee and moderate lactic acidity towards the tail end, with suggestions of white grape, stone, citrus and tropical fruits lingering briefly into an aftertaste that dries out pretty quickly. Light in body, with moderately assertive carbonation that feels prickly on the tongue; feels crisp, with a right good bite. Refreshing to drink, and easy to do so.
Final Grade: 3.87, a very respectable B+. Sours are not a style I tend to drink on a daily basis, but I suppose if I did, Samurai Kettle Sour is the sort I'd gravitate towards. Fruited sours seem to be all the rage right now, and I do think they're nice once in a while... but at the end of the day, I prefer beer-flavoured beer, and Samurai showcases some very nice hop flavours, indeed. I liked this a fair bit more than I thought I would - kind of a niche appeal brew, but fans of dry-hopped sours should absolutely give this one a whirl.
