473 mL can from the LCBO, included in Cameron's I ❤️ Craft Beer mixed six pack. Coded Mar 22 2023 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a foggy, translucent golden-yellow colour, with pulpy sediment visible within its body. It's capped with nearly an inch of smooth, foamy white head that collapses within ninety seconds or so, quickly reduced to a thin collar and a few wisps on the surface. It smells of lime zest and grainy, wheaty pale malts, with hints of lime juice, ocean water and lemon; very mild lactic funk.
It tastes alright: lime juice and salt water come through initially, with bready pale malts and grainy sweetness standing strong by mid-sip. Lime zest and lemony acidity at the finish, dissipating into a mildly citrusy/salty aftertaste. Light in body, with low carbonation that weakly agitates the surface of the palate; feels a little flat and slick, which makes it less refreshing than it might be if it had more of a bite. Drinkable, but a little underwhelming.
Final Grade: 3.7, a B grade. Cameron's Baja Norte is ok, but hardly a standout. Given that tequila does not seem to be an ingredient, I think marketing this as a 'margarita gose' was a bad move. Even if you trick a few margarita-lovers into buying it, I don't think they'll be fooled - it drinks more like a salty light lime beer, if anything. And for the record, I hate tequila, so it's not as if I'm bummed about its absence... I just think it's a poor marketing strategy. In any event, this is a passable gose that I might revisit at some point, but it's not a priority.
