330ml bottle with BBD Dec 2018.
L: Pale gold, faint haze, many streams of micro bubbles and two fingers of dense suds with excellent retention.
S: Pale malt and new world hops.
T: Sharp, clean Belgian yeast combines nicely with citrusy, bitter hops. Hops are not overdone.
F: Light/medium body, moderate carbonation, moderate bitterness. Long, dry finish.
O: Clean and refreshing IPA. Very nicely balanced. American hops compliment rather than dominate the Belgian yeast.
A 330ml bottle with a date of March 2017 - I can't tell if this is the BB or the bottling date (I only received this beer a couple of weeks ago). Acquired from a webshop. Described on the label as a limited release Belgian IPA; hopped with Cascade, Chinook, Centennial and Amarillo.
A: Poured into an IPA glass. Bottle conditioned. A rich amber hue with faint haze and good carbonation. Produces a large head of creamy white foam that lasts for a few minutes before settling as a surface layer. Some lacing.
S: Aroma of fruity Belgian yeast with notes of banana, yeast esters, faint spice, subtle caramel malt and a vague leafiness. Alright but little hop character in evidence.
T: Tastes of Belgian yeast and malt, with notes of fruity yeast esters, banana, mild spice, earthiness, caramel malt, faint grain and subtle leafiness. Again, the expected hop character is MIA. A delicate, leafy bitterness upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with soft carbonation and good body. A mild palate-coating sensation. Aftertaste of fruity yeast, malt and stewed leaves.
O: So-so; the Belgian character is certainly present but the IPA not so much. Looks alright, while the aroma and flavour are dominated by Belgian yeast notes and malt. The hops are very much in the back seat. Body is OK. I'm not sure if this beer is supposed to be insipid or if it's just old (as mentioned initially). It's drinkable enough but doesn't really meet expectations. No need to hunt it down.
