My second from Mondo, I like these guys. First, they have a very sophisticated and well-written website, even for a ten-year old. Second, they are a neighbourhood brewpub in a previously run-down neighbourhood whose regeneration appears to be on its way to being close to upscale. So it is with Battersea. Did Mondo do this? Not quite.
Third, I like these guys because they are ex-pats and yet proud of how Americans started a craft Revolution. Now for all this, I give them very good Overall Hugs.
Not so much for their lager. Machina reminds me of a Helles; but it's not quite there. A masterful Helles has a more active yeast and uses hops for flavour and balance. Machina uses hops mostly for balance, to keep the sweet malt from ruining the lager. There's also some fruitiness in Machina that, I'm guessing, came from inadequate lagering. A Helles should have layered subtleties and finish cleaner. Where Machina is like the master Helles is that they are both soft.
I think at this point, Mondo should stick to its ales. I'll try those.
