Very Good
Notes: Our Seventh Star IPA is a ripe, fruity brew that features the elusive Idaho Experimental #7 hop. This new contender boasts bright notes of melon, grape and strawberry, which we offset against a light swirl of Azaca hops, allowing for just a splash of tropical fruit. Like the Seventh Sister of the Pleiades, this divine IPA straddles the gulf between heaven and earth to deliver a truly cosmic experience.

On-tap at Miller's Ale House, Watertown, MA

A: The beer is hazy dark yellow in color. It poured with a half finger high white head that consistently left a short head covering the surface.
S: Light aromas of white grapes and strawberries are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and has flavors of honeydew melon, white grapes, and strawberries. No bitterness is perceptible.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a low to moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This IPA is very fruity and the taste has an interesting mix of flavors.

After the disappoint that was (the exorbitantly priced) Golden City, I thought I'd give this hometown brewery another shot with their Seventh Star. It was marginally better. The problem is that the flavor is muddled - is it berry? flowers? grapefruit? coffee? It just tastes unclearly bitter and spicy. Not terrible, just not great.

Really enjoyed how Idaho 7 was implemented on this beer. Nose and flavor were fun and delicious... clearly a berry/strawberry angle to it. A little undercarbed tho and the appearance didn't promote salivation for me as do some of the other NEIPAs out there. Would absolutely buy again.

Drank it from the can, but from what I can make out, it appears pale yellow with a white head. Melon, berry, mango in the nose. Delicious tasting. Juicy with white wine, cantaloupe, strawberry, a spicy herbal bite and strong bitterness. Medium bodied with great prickliness in the feel. A great beer. Batch 37.

Big, close to three fingers head of cream white froth, large divots form in the surface as it evaporates but the overall retention level is good, lacing is basically just a few random splotches, nothing noteworthy. The hazy liquid remains bright if fully translucent, golden to lighter orange in hue, no beads just random bubbles. The nose has a dank and leafy foundation over which floats pretty floral notes, tangerine citrus, pine and moderately deep mango, apricot, peach fruit scents, little bit of everything and does not go long on any one element. Some initial bitterness through the attack but after that rounds into a plush, juicy experience highlighting pink grapefruit, tangelo citrus as well as peach, melon, mango fruit. Cocoa that verges on coffee bean and some honey and bread dough keep it smooth even as the carbonation churns up a much bigger storm than expected. The damp herbaceousness outlasts the fruit at the end. Lots of flavor but it too often feels pulled in opposite direction and comes off indecisive.

16oz can stamped 7/6/17. Looked fine as far as color goes and the nose was citrus. Taste was citrus[grapefruit] forward , maybe slightly out of balance for our taste. Definitely a summer beer. Purchased at Town Center. Not high on our repurchase list.

16 oz can no date

Pours a slightly hazy orange color with a thin head.

Aroma is vaguely tropical but full of peach and melon character. Very pleasant. Really pulls you in.

Surprisingly the taste does not follow the aroma. It hits with an upfront blast of moderate to strong peppery bitterness that masks the hop flavor, but there is a slight hint of sweet malt in the background which really rounds it off nicely. It is there though with similar character - barely able discern some stone fruit in the flavor. While I was hoping for a juice bomb I'm pretty pleased with the crispness of the flavor so still high ratings in taste, In fact I put this up there in the top 10% of standard IPAs for overall taste and feel.

Feel is light and crisp but forward with the bitter.

Overall I do wish some of the hop character came forward -- it is possible this is an older can and the flavor has dissipated though. I will have to find this again and give it a try to see if a fresher can can do more.

Poured from the can into a Spiegelau IPA glass.

Fairly clear straw yellow, with nice, creamy head.

The nose is full of citrus, with a backbone of slightly soapy resin.

A lot of juicy orange and lime starts you off. The slight soapiness from the nose is there as well, along with a nice hoppy bitterness. Finish is a bit of blood orange and lime.

Medium bodied with good carbonation.

This was a very solid IPA, not as New Englandy as I thought it would be. Very drinkable and well balanced.

Tall can, I'm seeing no dating info

Typical almond amber pour, the off white head is lasting nicely, and leaving low sheeting and decent looking bands of lacing.

Resiny hop sniff, with some grassyness and lime

Respectable IPA, more of the sniff on the palate, resiny, grassy, not getting much tropical as is advertized on the label...solid if not anything amazing IPA...worth a try

A- Tallboy pours into a stemmed glass with a slightly hazy, pale yellow body and a massive creamy white head. The cap is thick and rises above two fingers with great retention. Thick blankets of lacing form on the glass with webs drizzling beneath them.

S- Semi-sweet juicy stone and tropical fruit nectars off the top with mango, peach, orange, floral and a bit of melon notes. Hops first and foremost but sweetness and pale grains are present in the backdrop.

T- The beer starts off with hops and a moderate sweetness to go along with them. Luckily there is not much of a caramelized flavor allowing the notes of melon, grape, berries, grass, floral, bitter grapefruit, sweet orange, herbal and mango to still lead the way. Freshly cracked pale barley, yeast bread and cereal grains also come to mind providing some balance.

MF- Puffy and slightly creamy overall texture. Feels a bit syrupy and slick and the carbonation is on the high side. Ends with a sharp citrus pith bitterness which lingers with sweetness.

Fresh hops are the focus but the brew is also rather sweet. Leans towards the tropical fruit spectrum but hop complexity is found with citrus, grass, floral and herbal tones coming through.

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine #120

Unique, Balanced, Juicy, Drinkable
Down The Road Brewery uses experimental Idaho7 and Azacca hops, not your usual mix, but Seventh Star seems to be one of the new wave of IPAs that I welcome with open arms. There are too many IPAs that taste very similar these days. Suggestions of melon rind, orange pulp, grapefruit pith, green tea, and lime leaves. The hop bitterness is very assertive, but the maltiness is just big enough to deal with it all. I love the slightly juicy finish, and I'll have no problem going back to this brew. [Jason]

Nice orange color with a little head and a bit of lacing.
Definitely a mango smell to it. Not overly hoppy but a decent amount of bitterness. I like it but not one of my favorites.

pours nice orange with nice hazy body. nose is Some pepper and corriander with stRong grapefruit. taste is very strong peels of grapefruit and lime with some peppery spice notes prevelant. this beer seems to have good potential but I get so much peppery spice in the front palate and seems like the spices overwhelm the hops. a little tweaking would make this a nice brew but for now there are some unbalanced nuances that need to be worked out.

Had on tap. Pours clear, light yellow in color, with 1/4 inch head. Taste is grapefruit, lemon, and guava. Medium bodied, bitter, and dry--especially the aftertaste. Above average, but I like several IPAs more and I prefer several other offerings from this brewery.

Golden yellow with a foamy/slightly creamy head.

Aroma: im getting mango, slight peach, citrus.

Taste: very light bitterness, tangerine, citrus, nice hop finish on tongue. Bit of sweetness at the end as well, especially as you drink more of it.

Feel: soft, light but not thin. Has a bit of body to it.

The can art is also nice.

Again no date on the can...

Pours a big fluffy creamy 1 finger head that fades at a med pace, nice messy lacing, super hazy slight orange tangerine yellow color.

Nose some citrus, tangerine orange, generic fruity almost stone fruit notes, mild sweet malty aroma, some floral notes and then into candied fruit, candied orange.

Taste brings a bit of a sweet malt, toasted malt out front, then quickly into big hops, spicy chewy hops, plenty of orange peel, citrus and generic fruit, plenty of grapefruit, a bit of candied citrus rind, mild stone fruit. Late it turns mostly to grapefruit and bitter rind, with a drier finish, a huge ramp of bitterness a big spicy bitterness lingering on the finish, tons more grapefruit rind lingering.

Mouth is med bod, decent carb.

Overall not bad, more of an IPA from a few years ago, quite bitter though, nothing to write home about. These guys made amazing beers before they were an official brewery, then their first few beers out were good, and since that they have seemed to be making meh beers, so wonder what happened.

It's really good but considering a six pack of tall boys is 15 dollars here in Boston, I think there's better IPAs at the price point. That being said I would highly reccomend this and the rest of Down the Road's IPA lineup if you like beautifully hopped and fruit forward brews.

On-tap 6/5/2016 at Bukowski Tavern in Boston, MA, served in a nonic pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep amber color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains caramelized malts, earthy hops and some citrus.

T: The taste starts out bready with a hearty malt character up front. Then a strong earthy hops bitterness comes in. There is some sweetness from flavors of caramel and citrus that create a very good balance. The after-taste is slightly hoppy and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is dry and slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down very easily, not too filling, decent kick, good representation of style, this is a very solid IPA to drink for a long time.

A bit hazy with a light gold color. Modest head but it leaves many streaks of lace along with three rings of lace from each sip.

Fresh cut grass and dandelions is the initial smell I get. Behind that I get tropical fruit (pineapple and mango).

Smooth toasted malt start. Good hop bite in the swallow with a prickly grapefruit aftertaste. Highly carbonated with a semi-rich body. The finish is like black pepper in terns of bitterness. Notable alcohol warmth in the finish. This

Clean, crisp citrus and fruit body that drinks real easy. Golden bronze pour. Aroma of citrus, crystal malt and some tartness. Not sour-tart, just something fruity-tart. Taste has a slightly sweet and spritzer-like citrus body by way of the grape and strawberry notes from the hops. Interesting profile, great beer.

Light, bright berry flavor carries through with an acidic character unlike ripe citrus, dry wine or sake. More along the lines of underripe wild strawberries - light, tart berry like hop character with little to no sweetness. Very interesting. A bitter character throws me off a bit. Unique and tasty, however.

edit: had it again and revamped my rating to "meh."
